This is a semi-competitive EDH deck using Meren as commander focusing on using ETB and death triggers creatures largely. This deck is based on Gromgrom's earlier "75% meren stax deck": deck:10-11-15-aAW-meren. Major difference is a land/destruction/sac sub theme using cards like Titania, Protector of Argoth, Acidic Slime, ramanup excavator , Strip Mine, and Sylvan Safekeeper . Also a newer minor theme of -1/-1 with cards like Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons, Devoted Druid, Channeler Initiate, Wickerbough Elder, and Woodfall Primus .

For details on cards used see primer below:

Show primer: Show

Skullclamp: Almost auto include as well. In this deck in particular this is a fabulous card. It works with around 20 of the cards in this deck either directly or on tokens created. With mana ramp getting this early could be used as a mini necropotence

Sol Ring: Auto use card unless making for duel commander

Strionic Resonator: Mainly here due to ability to double meren's abilities. Can either return 2 creatures to hand/play or add 2nd experience counter. It also works with Grave Pact, Awakening Zone, Phyrexian Arena and any creature ETB/Dying trigger. It does cost mana to use and we have no way to untap it repeatedly, and we have Panharmonicon now so may get cut.

Panharmonicon: Beatiful card, and this is a deck that can abuse this more than most EDH decks. This deck is normally running 15+ creatures with ETB effects, and with Meren can then recur and double again. If going to use better to favor creatures with ETB to improve its value.

Dryad Arbor: Both creature and a land. Unfortunately does suffer from summoning sickness and easily removable. I treat more as a 0CC creature than a mana land. This has great synergy with Titania, Protector of Argoth and Sylvan Safekeeper . Also counts as a forest so can be fetched by cards like Wood Elves. As a bonus it can be used with Birthing Pod to fetch 1CC creatures. Can be recursed to play with meren even with 0 experience counters.

Walking Ballista: Technically 0CC outside of the stack. More versatile than Triskelion and works with Necrotic Ooze and Mike all the same. Now that have infinite mana combo we can take advantage of what it can do over trike. Also if needed can cast for 0 to get a free experience counter.

Birds of Paradise: The ability to generate black mana is actually important in a key combo. Using lots of 1CC ramp creatures so obviously birds are automatic add

Deathrite Shaman: Provides graveyard hate, life gain, and ramp.

Elves of Deep Shadow: Mana elf that generates B and deals damage. Another option for one of the infinite combos

Llanowar Elves: Good old classic mana elf. Glad to be able to sleeve it up again

Elvish Mystic: Another 1CC mana elf

Caustic Caterpillar: Great enchantment/artifact hate with built in sacrifice. Majority of cards that hurt this deck are going to be enchantments, and artifact heavy decks can be annoying in general. Can be mana intensive with cost if plan to recur often.

Spore Frog: Seems so bland at first but one of the better cards in the deck. One drop, that can sacrifice itself, generate experience, and can fog and stall aggressive opponent.

Sylvan Safekeeper : New addition, part of new Land Stax subtheme. Provides additional protection (shroud) like Lightning Greaves, while also strong synergy with Titania, Protector of Argoth. Part of the land strategy

Viscera Seer: "The engine". One of the most common cards to search for. Provides not only self sacrifice but can be used to sacrifice others and scry's to boot. Key factor in infinite combo options (or Ashnod's Altar)

Apprentice Necromancer: Can generate experience counters quickly and can help get some of the higher CC ETB creatures in play earlier. Best targets would be creatures with persist or with death triggers. For one more mana could use Doomed Necromancer , which keeps the target in play. One less mana does help, also this card works with Skullclamp. This now gives us a Flash-Hulk like play with Protean Hulk so no way going to cut now.

Dawntreader Elk: Replacing the more expensive Yavimaya Elder. Can be kept around till meren drops if want to build experience. If get mana locked at two can help get past. Provides a decent 2/2 as well for early blocking

Sylvan Ranger: Used mainly as a land replacement. Another two drop that doesn't accelerate but does fetch a land. Also doesn't self sacrifice, but is around to be sacrificed when meren arrives for experience. Added back due to Panharmonicon

Devoted Druid: Above average mana elf in this deck due to self sacrifice capacity. Also can provide two mana in single turn at base toughness. Important to have when using Contamination. Part of one of the easiest infinite combos possible in this deck.

Fauna Shaman: A living single use Survival of the Fittest per turn. Solid for a 2CC creature, helps complete combos and ability can be used by Necrotic Ooze

Sakura-Tribe Elder: Best mana accelerator overall. Two drop that fetches a land, puts in play, and sacrifices as well. Great target to recur couple of times in early game to ramp quickly.

Riftsweeper: Provides ability to get back any exiled cards, especially combo pieces. Can be recurred and reused multiple times, and despite putting in deck we have several repeatable tutors to go fetch. Also good synergy with Eldritch Evolution which self exiles, turns it into a mini green sun's zenith. Added when put in Panharmonicon

Channeler Initiate: Gives us a 2CC mana dork + infinite mana combo with Devoted Druid and Necrotic Ooze. Also works with the -1/-1 mini theme in deck, mainly can add 3 counters to Wickerbough Elder.

Hapatra Vizier Of Poisions: Favorite new legend. May make a hapatra deck itself later but realized we could take advantage of her in meren. She works with persist counters and devoted druid combo. She can potentially make infinite creatures. Only 2CC and good target with Hulk to set up later combo. For a deck like this that often wants to play slower and control the board or prison the deathtouch creatures can be good deterrent. Technically can keep up a Contamination with an open opponent to attack.

Eternal Witness: While Meren can get back any creature, witness provides recursion for our non-creature non-land cards. Tempted one day to try fetching witness from a Pattern of Rebirth and then immediately returning the rebirth to my hand :)

Fleshbag Marauder: Creature with built in stax effect. No reason not to run.

Merciless Executioner: Same card as Fleshbag Marauder, good enough to run two

Grim Haruspex: Provides card draw on decent body. Doesn't work with counters, but also doesn't cause sacrifices per turn like Smothering Abomination. Could lead to lots of card advantage if not removed. Better now with fewer token generators and more low CC creatures

Reclamation Sage: Great low cost ETB artifact/enchantment removal, solid card

Wood Elves: Ramp but added benefit can fetch Dryad Arbor and Overgrown Tomb. Also land comes into play untapped

Yisan, the Wanderer: Can be used with Necrotic Oooze / Devoted Druid for combo but it's just a solid tutor on a stick and needs to be answered.

Ramunap Excavator: Replaces Crucible of Worlds, aka "Magus of the Crucible". Easier for us to get it from library than Crucible and Meren could get him back if need to. Fits the land theme and synergizes great with Titania/Safekeeper/Dryad Arbor/Contamination. Also if opponent plays an Armageddon like effect we can rebuild faster.

Disciple of Bolas: As a creature its weak as a 2/1 for 4CC, but it can be great card advantage and decent life gain. It offers three things that are useful: card draw, life gain, free sacrifice option. One negative is it can be weak or useless if drawn early. Works with new Panharmonicon and Titania's tokens make great targets. Using on a Protean Hulk is probably best possible play.

Mindslicer: Great control/stax card. Can be used to set up a combo, or just to reset everyone to empty hand. Ideally trigger at end of turn before yours to benefit from draw(s) while others are now empty. Definitely can draw some hate across the table, so best used defensively.

Necrotic Ooze: Most important creature added in a while. Several infinite combos and even short of that provides amazing value in play mirroring abilities of many of creatures in deck. Not coming out soon :)

Wickerbough Elder: Interesting card, provides another piece of enchantment/artifact removal but mainly kept due to infinite combo option with Necrotic Ooze and Devoted Druid

Oracle of Mul Daya: Held off adding this for some time but now with ramanup excavator seems like a perfect time to add. This provides card draw/land recursion but mainly ability to play 2 a turn and includes fetch lands and strip mine/wasteland. Great synergy with Excavator and Titania.

Acidic Slime: A good removal card, but expensive at 5CC. Added back with Panharmonicon and with expansion of the Land sub-theme. The deathtouch is nice added touch.

Shriekmaw : In many ways this is really a 2CC card. You are likely to always cast it for evoke cost of , but it will require 5 experience counters to bring back to play. However, until then can bring back to hand and replay for evoke cost. That is why it's better than similar cards like Bone Shredder

Titania, Protector of Argoth: I love this card :), my backup commander essentially. This is replacing the Grave Titan that a number of Meren decks run. The titan is a beast, but it costs 1 more mana and makes 2/2 tokens on ETB and attacking. Titania costs 1 less, and with a sac land in grave gives you ramp/control and a 5/3 token. Combine with Dryad Arbor and can have an easy 5/3 each turn with Meren. And Sylvan Safekeeper can help protect her and Meren while providing feed for token generation (and a possible zuran orb like play to sac all/most lands and swing for lethal). One problem is she can be hard to cast if have Contamination out. By playing her I am currently using 8 sac lands and could go to 10. Also why using both Strip Mine and Ghost Quarter which offers me some potential recurring land destruction to help remove annoying opponent's lands or even target my own to get 2x 5/3 instead. Also now have Ramunap Excavator so can repeatedly replay lands and Oracle of Mul Daya gives us ability to play 2. Overall she is a fun card, keep an eye out for grave hate against you as she will become somewhat vanilla with sac lands and/or Dryad Arbor removed.

Sidisi, Undead Vizier: Overall Rune-Scarred Demon is better but costs 2 more. The exploit requirement shouldn't be hard to hit (where Bloodghast shines). Deathtouch is a nice added benefit and a reason to cast even if can't/won't pay the exploit cost. Having recurring tutoring is simply a great thing to have. Hapatra tokens would be good for the exploit cost now.

Gray Merchant of Asphodel: Similar to Kokusho, the Evening Star, but will drain more life if have 4 or more in play besides itself. Considering Grave Pact gives three by itself this isn't too unlikely. If can't get an infinite combo going recurring this repeatedly is a backup plan. Keeping in due to Panhamonicon, those two plus meren recursion could potentially close out a game in 1-2 turns.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed: The combo enabler. This automatically turns persist creatures into infinite combos. Makes Cauldron of Souls very dangerous. Surprising number of creatures are human as well. On negative side this means several creatures in this deck don't benefit from the undying effect. On plus side his No Mercy like effect could prove useful especially versus certain decks. This card is likely to draw a lot of attention so for combo may be best to have it be last card played.

Massacre Wurm: Closest thing to recurring wrath we have. Totally hoses token deck strategies, and can be lethal due to its secondary ability. That second ability also works well with our other stax cards like Grave Pact. Adding back due to Panharmonicon giving it -4/-4 and if combined with meren it can have its ETB trigger twice in one turn the -8/-8 will wipe out the opponents' entirely

Protean Hulk: Probably best new addition and we can abuse since was removed from banned list. We have 3 0CC creatures, and also the obvious Mike + Ballista combo. We can also pull a number of small creatures (including Viscera Seer and sac them with a meren on board then return hulk at EOT and trigger once for win. Worst case is wrath insurance and able to be a recurring green sun's zenith. Also gives as a 7CC for Birthind Pod. If pod off this can fetch Mike with Hulk and from pod get Primus for that stax combo.

Woodfall Primus : Largely used due to having persist. Combined with Melira, Sylvok Outcast, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, or Cauldron of Souls goes semi-infinite and can wipe opponent's of all non-creature permanents, which should give you game in most situations. If can't make use of the persist then its going to be a worse Terastodon. Card has a high cost and doesn't do enough by itself to warrant early use of Pattern of Rebirth. Is a good use of early Apprentice Necromancer as can trigger twice and leave you a 5/5 trampler. Usually not what I want in opening hand unless also have a Survival of the Fittest

Awakening Zone: Tokens don't fly and weak but autosac and generate mana, great for building experience and ramping. Keeping over Bitterblossom

Contamination: If not countered or destroyed could lock board down if no other opponent is heavy black. The sacrifice cost should be easy with so many token generators and meren's ability. Ideally want Meren and card like Devoted Druid out before casting. Is worth keeping in mind can choose to sacrifice it and bring back with Eternal Witness

Evolutionary Leap: Solid card, a sort of low cost random Birthing Pod, but doesn't put card in play. Could be useful with Volrath's Strongold to get card immediately.

Grave Pact: Good is being a 4CC creature stax enchantment, bad is the in the cost. Great card overall, especially mean with cards like Fleshbag Marauder. Adds 3 black devotion for Gary as well.

Pernicious Deed : At worst its 3 mana to wipe out all tokens. Unfortunately, predates Planeswalkers it seems so they aren't referenced. Great controlled reset button.

Phyrexian Arena: Seems used in almost any black deck. Auto card advantage, but more life drain unfortunately

Phrexian Reclamation: One of my favorite cards, with lower CC on creatures and less token producers makes more sense to add this in. Supports meren and provides double resurrect (or more) on turn. Also great use of Dryad Arbor as free to drop

Survival of the Fittest : Part of my favorite two card combo of all time (Recurring Nightmare + Survival of the Fittest ). Need to keep at least one creature in hand, but can use to stack graveyard. So good not to use if you have one.

Sylvan Library: Surprised lot of meren decks don't use this, seems choose Phyrexian Arena and possibly Grisly Salvage instead. This to me is like a mini recurring grisly salvage, and with positive of not accidentally dumping cards in graveyard you want to keep. Life can be expensive but later in game with Gray Merchant of Asphodel or Kokusho, the Evening Star could be swimming in it. To me the use of so many fetch lands is what makes this card great, it gets a card deeper than Arena and no life loss. It also just costs 2 mana!

Beast Within: In duel commander may be more risky, but with 3 opponents or more giving someone a 3/3 creature is not that big of a deal normally. Getting ability at instant speed and hitting any permanent is totally worth it.

Krosan Grip: Added back in as can see how an uncounterable disenchant that can also interrupt infinite combos is very useful.

Vampiric Tutor: Great tutor, instant and one mana. Does add one more life drain though

Buried Alive: Fetching cards like Bloodghast and Viscera Seer early and immediately rezzing is common play. What to pick should be dictated by board state partially but getting at least one kickass creature is usually my preference.

Demonic Tutor: The only more automatic card in black than Phyrexian Arena. Best tutor overall in magic IMO.

Green Sun's Zenith: Very interesting tutor, made far more useful with so many cheap CC creature drops in green to fetch. Also have Dryad Arbor as a 0CC option. Can also fetch another tutor in Fauna Shaman

Eldritch Evolution: A great tutor plus offers way to sac a creature for experience. We also are using Riftsweeper now so can get this back from exile.

Jarad's Orders: Another tutor, this is in between Wordly Tutor and Buried Alive. Can only pick two cards but get to put one in hand, which could be very useful.

Maelstrom Pulse: A second Beast Within, loses instant speed but no negative and can wipe out multiple copies either across opponents or all copies of a token.

Black Sun's Zenith: Considering due to Melira, Sylvok Outcast which offers a one sided wrath effect.

Dimir House Guard: Have slotted in before, like it as another tutor and sac engine. Besides that fairly bland creature and can only have meren return to hand if have less than 4 experience counters.

From Beyond: Similar to Awakening Zone, this is a possible third enchantment token generator. Tokens are slightly better but card is one higher CC and we need to use an eldrazi in deck to make use of other ability.

Krosan Tusker : An old favorite. It's cycling is why to use, and at 7CC pretty easy for meren to return to hand. By same token that's a lot of mana to spend to get value.

Melira, Sylvok Outcast: Was using with Cauldron of Souls, then realized Cauldron can't make infinite loop as new creatures lose the persist after die first time

Pattern of Rebirth: Great and fun card. This ends up working like a souped up one time Recurring Nightmare . Favorite targets include Sheoldred, Whispering One and Avenger of Zendikar.

Attrition: Not sure about keeping this here, don't have a lot of token generators and meren only returns one per turn. Does give additional value to grave pact enchantments, but the "non black" limitation is a big drawback

Bitterblossom : Great if get early, tokens don't autosac but they have flying which deck has very few instances of. Great with Skullclamp

Dictate of Erebos: Essentially a second Grave Pact, has benifit of Flash and only in casting cost, but also is 1CC higher

Primal Growth : Great mana ramp card. At worst its three mana for 1 extra land but most of time can get 2 lands and best part they come in untapped. So can usually cast something else after as well on turn three. Removed for more creature ramp

Regrowth: Willing to concede this is worth it because the cost is so low. At worst I've used to replay a fetch land to save me from a land screw situation. Along with Eternal Witness we have two cards, and one recurring, that can help get our non-creature cards back to our hand.

Sylvan Scrying: Used to fetch some of the key lands depending on situation.

Pox: Trusting this is worth playing more than having seen use so far. Death Cloud seems more controllable but can see it's mana cost being prohibitive. Would want to have Titania, Protector of Argoth out ideally or at least card like Grave Pact before casting.

Kokusho, the Evening Star: Part of drain pair with Gray Merchant of Asphodel. Worth noting this is one of only two flyers in deck currently, definitely one of the weaknesses of the deck. With three opponents alive this is +15 life and -5 around the table. Great card and due to death trigger perfect choice for Birthing Pod

Smothering Abomination: Is another flyer and offers potentially huge draw potential with tokens that Grim Haruspex does not, and also gives me something to fetch (and worthwhile) with From Beyond and potentially immediate card draw in that case from saved up scions. Trying out Rune-Scarred Demon instead again instead

Diligent Farmhand : Good all around, 1CC can ramp and sacrifice itself.

Fyndhorn Elves: Another 1CC mana elf

Joraga Treespeaker : Interesting card, the level up cost can be immediately returned through tap ability. Currently count ~9 elves in deck currently, so final level could be useful if have nothing else to invest in

Carrion Feeder: A second Viscera Seer, also can become a threat and can be useful potentially with Necrotic Ooze due to the +1/+1 counters

Avenger of Zendikar: Our primary token generator. Already worth using but our more landfall/sac focus of deck this could make a ton of tokens and make them enormous. Another reason don't mind not using Grave Titan as would want to go for Avenger most of the time anyway. Should attract board wipe.

Sheoldred, Whispering One: If not removed, and quickly, this could hand you the game. My favorite creature to get early with a Pattern of Rebirth. Combining both an auto Grave Pact and doubling Meren's ability in one card seems almost unfair.

Rune-Scarred Demon: It's a very nice creature, even though do already have Sidisi, Undead Vizier as a creature tutor, and at 7CC it can be dead card if drawn too early. Swapping back in for Smothering Abomination as was using that mostly for flying and this is better flyer and possible good target for Pattern of Rebirth.

Necroplasm: Not crazy about this, replacement for Massacre Wurm. Bad synergy with Titania, Protector of Argoth and other token generators. On flip side removes tokens regardless of size, and can be returned via dredge. But could backfire if can't sacrifice quickly.

Puppeteer Clique: Currently both only card for mirror match and also used for infinite combos from persist. Goes infinite with both Melira, Sylvok Outcast and Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. Important to note it only can recurse opponent's creatures and also exiles at end of turn for better or worse.

Solemn Simulacrum: Most expensive ramp card in deck. Used largely due to birthing pod: it helps fill the weak 4CC spot and offers a card with both ETB and on death triggers.

Farhaven Elf: Another 3CC ramp, can fetch swamps. Nothing special.

Ophiomancer: No other card in deck makes snakes, so it will make a snake every turn if none around. Wouldn't have noticed it said "beggining of EACH upkeep" if hadn't been pointed out to me. The deatchtouch snake is good for blocker if nothing else, or with a Viscera Seer have easy way to build lots of experience counters quickly.

Bloodghast: Landfall/destruction is a secondary theme. Compared to other self recurring creatures it costs no mana to recur. With all the ramp, fetch lands, and Titania, Protector of Argoth should be able to recur easily. Good use with Ashnod's Altar

Zulaport Cutthroat: The Triskelion of the deck. Cheap and easy to get out and unlike Blood Artist it hits all opponents at once. Not a very threatening card in of itself so could stay out and provide some decent life gain, which we need more than ever with lots of lifeloss cards. Can work with several infinite combos that involve persist/undying. Great way to take advantage of Necrotic Ooze combos

Bane of Progress: Trying out, essentially replacing Acidic Slime. While we have other enchantment/artifact removal it can only be recursed once a turn or possibly hit infinite combo (then should often win anyway). Facing an artifact heavy deck (or enchantment one to lesser extent) that can ramp and drop hand quick can be an issue for us as only Pernicious Deed can really wipe multiples at once. Bane is intriguing as it can shift the balance of power so quickly, wiping out an opponent's field and giving you a massive creature all at once. Follow up with a Disciple of Bolas and that could be game. On negative side we play a lot of enchantments and several artifacts. One big advantage of this card is it does bypass shroud effects, only indestructible gets around it.

Lightning Greaves: There are some cases I could see where using Swiftfoot Boots would be better. But Meren is main target either way and she doesn't really need to be targeted usually. The 0 cost is main seller.

Crucible of Worlds: Since we are using Titania, Protector of Argoth, Dryad Arbor, 8-10 sac lands, and Sylvan Safekeeper this seemed perfect to slot in. I consider it at worst a 3CC Sylvan Ranger hopefully fetching me a land from grave turn comes into play. This and a Dryad Arbor can pay for a Contamination alone, and every fetch card would get me a 5/3 with Titania out. The most powerful effect would be Strip Mine every turn, and on flip side protecting me from mirror effect or Armageddon. If you have a copy certainly worth it IMO.

Ashnod's Altar: Great sacrifice engine. Better than viscera seer but less likely to access in game and costs 2 more. If we were to be using X cards like Black Sun's Zenith, Exsanguinate, or Death Cloud becomes much more useful.

Golgari Signet: Mainly used due to Contamination, and can be cast now turn one with Ancient Tomb or Mana Crypt

Mana Crypt: Only negative is chance to die to this from upkeep life loss. Our commander has 2 generic in CC so can help rush her out.

Cauldron of Souls: Trying this out, looks like can generate lot of value. It can also help protect cards and Meren from wipes. Since adding this also added Melira, Sylvok Outcast to open up whole range of infinite combos. Its ability to be left untapped and played defensively is what helps keeps it in the deck. At minimum can start doubling ETB effects as it operates like a once a turn Mikaeus, the Unhallowed
