Modern Aggro Competitive Tribal

...of course you do!!

My homebrew modern merfolk deck. This was the first modern deck I made. Through time, I learned alot of new things and changed it a lot, now it's a really good deck. I often play it at our local FNMs.

Please rate and comment :) Thanks!

I think merfolk has a good meta, because most players don't know how to sideboard against it or simply aren't prepared for this.

...so let's have a look at it.

The merfolk - We are Legion! For we are many!

Cursecatcher Our salty 1drop - Brings alot of disrupt into the earlygame, especially due to the mass of cheap and early instant and sorcery spells. No interruptchance like Path to Exile + Remand or no cardadvantage through serum vision at the beginning of the game. Let's us even disable or delay combosat late game like Gifts Ungiven.

Master of the Pearl Trident + Lord of Atlantis The good'ol allstars of merfolk decks - our gangleaders. Pushes our board, gives us some nice devotion and let's us attack our opponentsdirectly in combination with cards like Spreading Seas. If your merfolkdeck lacks a playset of these ... it sucks (no offense).

Silvergill Adept Our carddraw-machine and nice attacker due to his 2 power, so it's even better than his longeared companion Elvish Visionary. His drawback isn'tthat grave at all, because our hand is filed with merfolk cards normally. With Aether Vial we can even cheat out this salty little fish without drawback.

Merrow Reejerey The combo enabler. It pushes our board as well as our Lord of Atlantis + Master of the Pearl Trident and his second ability can untap our Aether Vial,so we can cheat all our fishy bastards onto the board. If we have no Aether Vial at play we can still untap a land or disrupt our opponent.

Master of WavesYou know this friend of yours who always brings alot of people to partys? Yes this is also one of them! The most expensive creature in this deck, but he can easily finishthe game for you. With all this tasty devotion due to kira, the great glass-spinner + lord of atlantis + master of the pearl trident he enters the board we a shitton of partychicks. Nice, hu?One of his great advantages is his protection against those annoying Anger of the Gods + Lightning Bolt + Pyroclasm .

Kira, Great Glass-SpinnerFirst I was sceptic about this one... how could I? Although no merfolk it's still a good friend of us! He gives some nice devotion, is flying (block this stupid Inkmoth Nexus)and protects all our creatures from those nasty removal spells like Lightning Bolt + Path to Exile .

The support - the sea is raw and unpredictable

Aether Vial Oh godly vial! Best 1drop, if we can play this one at first turn we get a step closer to victory. With this we can play at turn 2 a Cursecatcher + Lord of Atlantis or wathever 2drop is in our hand.In most cases it's best to keep it one 2 counters, sometimes we want 3 to play all those Kira, Great Glass-Spinner + Merrow Reejerey in our hand. I only put it on 4 once or twice, because i only had 3 mana on the board andhad to play a Master of the Waves in order to avert defeat, but this is the worst case scenario.

Spreading Seas Annoy your enemys! First i had Aquitect's Will in this deck because it's one cheaper and has the merfolk-tribal for cards like Silvergill Adept + Wanderwine Hub . How blindfolded I was!Spreading Seas is so much better, because it can disable all opponents with no blue cards so easily and you can always draw a card in contrary to Aquitect's Will. In addition it gives us 1 devotion forour Master of the Waves, while Aquitect's Will gave nothing. The I learned while playing that the Merfolk-Tribal isn't much of an upside in comparision of the power of Spreading Seas.

Path to Exile You know... I hate these Tharmogoyf + Goblin Guide and all those other annoying mischieves. Send them into exile!

Mana Leak The card I'm still most unsure wether to play 2 copys or not, maybe i will replace it with 2 Serum Visions. On one hand it saved me alot of stress, but it's also often a dead draw because i want to play my 2manacreatures and not wait with my mana. In worst case I lose a turn. Serum Visions in contrary would fit better into my manacurve. Maybe the new Ojutai's Command could be a thing, his first option would fit intothis deck very well. On the other hand it's a 4mana card.

Cryptic Command Our fishy soldiers serve under the cryptic command! I like this card alot, it can be a finisher in alot of games out of nowhere. It saves my arse at so many situations so I could swing for the win. It's diversity is incredible - Carddraw is always good, send back this annoying permanent - eh voila, counter that combo? - no problem! or tap all those creatures while attacking and swing for the win next turn, because we have noSpreading Seas on the board.

The manabase - the O for our gills

Cavern of Souls for obvious reasons. Say no to all those Mana Leak + Remand . It wasn't a problem for me so far, because this deck has less no-merfolk cards/creatures.

Seachrome Coast + Wanderwine Hub I splash white for Path to Exile as well for my sideboard. I don't play Hallowed Fountain because I don't need white mana THAT urgent and Wanderwine Hub nearly always works and Seachrome Coast fits into all of this becaus it's an aggro deck.

Moorland Haunt The manland, that wasn't one. Great for blocking tny, annoying flyers like Inkmoth Nexus, Lingering Souls or Bitterblossom.

Island always wins! ... and the opponent shouldn't be able to Path to Exile for free.

The Sideboard - Didn't see that comin...

Ghostly Prison Against faster Aggro Decks than ours.

Imposing Sovereign Same reason as above. I think it's better than Blind Obedience in this deck, because this is a creaturebased deck.

Glaring Spotlight You know what I hate? Correct, hexproof decks. Sadly never played against one at our local FNM. But my friend has mine (but I normally don't sideboard against decks of my friends)

SpellskiteYou know what I even hate more? These @%!?+ of a #@ Infect decks. I lost once so hard against one at FNM.

Rest in Peace you Gifts Ungiven + Tarmogoyf + Vengevine . Very strong card against alot of decktypes. It shuts down as well the whole delve mechanic... I'm looking at you Tasigur, the Golden Fang

Stony Silence completely eliminates Affinity.

Tidebinder Mage Good against all red and green creaturebased decks. Perfect sideboardcard.

Serum Visions Against monoblue or some bluebased decks Spreading Seas is a dead draw. I usually board in 2 Serum Visions for this.
