This deck is a new approach to the mill strategy thanks to Phenax, God of Deception. It centers around playing defense and ramping mana until you can combo out an easy win. This deck wins the game without attacking once...
Against anything besides a Supreme Verdict deck, you're just jamming out walls to fend off attackers while ramping with Sylvan Caryatid and
Kiora, the Crashing Wave
. I feel like she works well in this deck. Her +1 is like another wall, her -1 allows you to ramp even faster, and her ultimate will win the game, whether by milling 9 each or by being the only creatures that actually attack.
You pretty much just durdle behind your walls until you land a Phenax, God of Deception. He's clearly the lynch-pin in this deck. Once he hits the board, you pass the turn, block with your walls, and then tap them at the end of the opponents turn. By then it's very possible to mill for 20+, untap for your turn, and mill for 27+ once Phenax's summoning sickness wears off. By then you should be able to pass the turn with your opponent having an empty library. That's being optimistic, but it shouldn't take many more turns than that depending on the board state.
Another fun combo comes in with Duskmantle Guildmage. His first ability is just stupid with Phenax on the board, and it can be double or even triple stacked for an insane amount of un-counterable damage. And if you're having trouble finding Phenax, the guildmage's second ability lets you get the milling started with all the mana you've ramped into.
With the ramp possibilities, Opportunity seemed like the right card draw engine. You can then flood the board with more walls and mill for insane amounts.
I've been wanting to build a competitive mill deck since I started playing Magic, and I finally feel like this one might be able to compete. Just like the mill strategy in general, this deck is really unique and is unlike anything else I've ever seen. Please leave any/all comments and tell me how terrible you think this deck is ;)
