When you look at this list, your probably thinking... WHY is he playing Archmage's Charm over Force of Negation?

Well, the reason is, is that Merfolk is NOT a fast deck, with its fastest Modern win on turn 4, which is still pretty unlikely. So, Archmage's Charm is huge value in the early game, with the ability to steal a Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Death's Shadow, or even taking a hammer time target! In long grindy matchups, Archmage's Charm is also good as it allows you to DRAW CARDS, which even drawing 1-2 extra cards can win a grindy matchup. The final ability, countering a spell, though their are much, much better other counterspells, this can still provide value.

This is my overall favorite deck in THE ENTIRE WORLD of MTG, and in my opinion, a very powerful one. I am making this specific list more focused on a controlling strategy with Cards such as Vodalian Hexcatcher, Cursecatcher, Subtlety, and Archmage's Charm! I find that this is a very good deck for beginners looking to get into modern, or magic in general, as it's fairly simple, fun to play, and pretty budget!

If you do buy this Modern Merfolk Deck, here are some upgrades to consider: 3 island ---> 2 Cavern of Souls + 1 Oboro, Palace in the Clouds (Just a great upgrade in general as it fixes Mutavault mana, and allows uncounterable merfolk)
