My LGS hosted a free modern FNM and i didn't have a deck to play so I dug through the origins commons for some
Faerie Miscreant
s and picked up 2
Ojutai's Command
s in order to convert my casual ninja faeries deck into a modern deck.
I had ZERO expectations of winning any matches with my pile of cards as i sat down for my first round.
A couple hours later i was in possession of a sweet (and suggestive) new
Serum Visions
and this was my record:
2/0 vs Jund
2/0 vs Naya Burn
2/1 vs Junk
Draw vs Junk
= Tie for first!
I suspect that my wins can greatly be attributed to luck, however, i also believe that this deck does have a lot of potential to win due to the great synergy between most of the cards
Ornithopter lets you : A) play
Faerie Impostor
on turn one B) Ninjutsu off of it and replay it second main phase C) block lingering souls for days
Faerie Impostor
can be an excellent turn one threat, can bounce your Spellstutter Sprites for extra value, lets you chain mistblade shinobis turn after turn (attack with impostor - ninjutsu - play impostor - bounce mistblade), and nets you extra value with
Faerie Miscreant
when you have 2 on board
Mistblade Shinobi
and Ninja of the Deep Hours can make serious tempo swings. For example turn two you can attack with a 0 or 1 drop and ninjutsu in
Mistblade Shinobi
to bounce a mana dork setting the opponent a turn back.
the ninja's also allow you to return
Faerie Impostor
s Spellstutter Sprites and
Faerie Miscreant
s to your hand for more value
Ojutai's Command
provides an insane amount of synergy in the deck. The first ability affects 16 of the creatures in the deck, the second ability is amazing against burn, the third ability is relevant against most decks in the format and the fourth ability will always be good no matter the other modes.
In the match against jund, at one point I had 2
Faerie Miscreant
s in play with a
Faerie Impostor
in the graveyard. My opponent attempted to cast Tarmogoyf which i was then able to counter with
Ojutai's Command
returning
Faerie Impostor
. On my turn i drew another
Faerie Impostor
, attacked for two, played faerie impostor bouncing miscreant, playing miscreant to draw a card, playing the second impostor bouncing miscreant and playing miscreant again for a second extra draw which allowed me to win the game
Thassa, God of the Sea lets you get damage through with your ninjas, can be a solid 5/5 beater, and lets you scry away dead draws.
All in all i was very satisfied with the deck.
There were however a couple cards with which i was dissatisfied with
1)
Sword of Fire and Ice
: even though this card can be amazing I think it's too slow for the deck and makes you choose between keeping up counter magic
2) Remand there are quite a few matches where remanding just doesnt feel meaningful (burn, abzan)
if i were to replace these cards i would consider Familiar's Ruse and Military Intelligence
the casual version of my deck runs Standstill and military intelligence is the closest modern card i can find to it
Familiar's Ruse could also be very synergistic with
Faerie Miscreant
and Spellstutter Sprite, and when used with Ornithopter it is essentially just a Counterspell
Finally i believe some number of Mutavault would give the deck a lot more power in terms of damage potential and also in increasing the potency of Spellstutter Sprite as Mutavault can simply be tapped to activate itself when casting Spellstutter Sprite
If anyone has suggestions or ideas feel free to leave them in the comments, thanks!
