UPDATE - MH2 and
Abiding Grace
might have pushed this deck back into "playable" again, after the banning of Faithless Looting.
It serves as both, a way to gain life AND a way to return creatures like
Insolent Neonate
and
Children of Korlis
to the battlefield. The latter serving as a way to reliable regain your life, the former to serve as a blocker and looter, to load your GY with Firemane Angels while drawing into Zur's Wierding.
This is a budget lock-down combo-deck in Jeskai colors for the 'Modern' format.
Jeskai Weirding wins by stopping the opponent from drawing any cards using the namestake enchantment
Zur's Weirding
, while we aim to get two or more life on each of our turns, locking him out of the game. We then actually win by swinging in with
Firemane Angel
or
Celestial Colonnade
for leathal damage.
The main drawback on playing
Zur's Weirding
is, that it has a symmetrical effect that affects both players, which means that our opponent can lock ourselves out of the game too, if we are not careful about the timing we play Weirding. For this sake we mainboard cards like
Detention Sphere
,
Lightning Helix
and
Supreme Verdict
, to keep the board clean before and after we cast
Zur's Weirding
.
Since we are pretty dependent on gaining 2 or more life each turn, we run
Nyx-Fleece Ram
, which also has the added benefit of surving bolts and stopping early agression. The best card in our deck however is
Firemane Angel
. She is our main win-condition...besides an opponents capitulation.
The angel either gains life by staying on the field or she gains us life by being in our graveyard, which works great with our draw cards
Faithless Looting
and
Thirst for Knowledge
. Those allow us to dig deep for our enchatnment or they assist us in getting our angel into the graveyard, where she is harder to remove and still nets us the life we need to stop our opponent from drawing cards ever again.
When there is no life left that allows our opponent from disabling our own draws, we can start gathering and playing lands, untill we hit enough to play/resurrect our remaining
Firemane Angel
or alternatively attack with
Celestial Colonnade
, which should end the game rather fast.
I kept the manabase simple do to this being a budget cheese-deck. But, if you love the deck and can afford ist, I recommend playing the best/most consistent manabase you can think of, even if playing fetchlands into shock-duals feels like working in the opposite direction of our main strategy (in the long run it hurts less then pain-lands tho').
If you have any suggestions or tips for the deck I am happy to read your comments :)

//One word about splashing a color or building Esper-Wierding//
You can play
Zur's Weirding
in esper colors too.
Bloodchief Ascension
encourages to brew a version of this deck around it. The same goes for the now legal Thopter-Sowrd (
Thopter Foundry
+
Sword of the Meek
combo, which seems like a very good way to enabling the lock-down.
