Sideboard

Rakdos Midrange Control with plenty of kill spells, hand disruption, and threats. Born of the Gods gave us Mogis, God of Slaughter to have some fun with. Let's look at some of the included cards in this list.

Creatures:

  • Desecration Demon- one of the most important creatures in the deck, as landing one often forces your opponent to remove it, or at least sacrifice their board to it. There are certain situations where it's not as great such as against Xenagos, the Reveler, but for the most part it's pretty good.
  • Pack Rat- some black decks are moving away from playing this card. While I considered that, I couldn't make myself give up one of the most solid strategies in the mirror match against Mono Black Devotion. Though there are times where Pack Rat isn't as useful, when you're able to make rats faster than your opponent can deal with them, it can be hard for your opponent to catch up.
  • Mogis, God of Slaughter- He's kind of a badass. Hopefully with all the pieces of removal in the deck, it will often be possible to reduce your opponent's board to the point where they have to sacrifice important creatures or else take consistent 2 damage every upkeep.

Spells:

Hand Disruption:
  • Thoughtseize- There's plenty to say about the usefulness of this card, and it's very evident the impact it's made on the current season of standard. Definitely a solid way to remove threats from your opponent's hand.
  • Rakdos's Return- One of the benefits of playing with red in this deck. Resolving this spell against most decks can be brutal, forcing your opponent to often times discard the majority of their hand.

Removal:
  • Devour Flesh- A traditionally solid piece of early removal to force your opponent to sacrifice a creature. Gets around hexproof and is one of the deck's only answers against Blood Baron of Viskopa . 1 more copy in the sideboard.
  • Dreadbore- While it can only be cast at sorcery speed, this card is becoming more and more relevant with the increase in popularity of G/R monsters and similar decks. Overall, it just gives us an unconditional removal spell for annoying creatures and planeswalkers. It's a bit inconvenient against Master of Waves, but we've got other ways to deal with that guy.
  • Hero's Downfall- Probably the most useful removal spell in the deck. A very handy answer to a multitude of our opponent's threats for three mana.
  • Magma Jet- A bit of an odd choice, yes, but being able to resolve this one can be very helpful simply for the scry. A very practical removal to use on Elvish Mystic, or it can just be used to hit our opponent's in the face early on and control what's coming on top of our deck.

Card Draw:
  • Underworld Connections- This card can change the course of a game dramatically. It's a little too slow against aggro matchups, but against U/W control and Mono Black, it provides tons of advantage for a few life points. Also, it can be an efficient way to keep devotion up for the gods of the deck.

Other:
  • Crypt Incursion- This is one card I'm experimenting with in the deck. With the amount of removal in the deck, this can be a way for this deck to replenish our life total after being drained from an opponent's aggro creatures, opposing Gray Merchant of Asphodels, or even our own shock lands and Underworld Connections activations.

Please let me know what you guys think!
