Many moons past, I played Grixis. A friend told me about EDH, and I got excited. I wanted in, but I couldn't find a Grixis legendary (I had just started playing at the time). I did, however, have a mono-black legendary. Some spirit or something, that I never cast. I went ahead and went for it.

However, I didn't really have the cards. I ran out of decent black cards, and turned to my colorless cards to fill in the gaps.

Then came Scars of Mirrodin. The Scars block was STUFFED with great artifacts, like Prototype Portal and Piston Sledge. After paring down the "EDH" deck I was trying to play to 60-card Mono-Black grief, I kept the artifact scheme going. This was the first really "good" deck that I played. I could stalemate or defeat the friend that I played Magic with the most, and it was exhilarating.

Fast forward something like five or six years, and I'm starting to miss that. So, I'm planning to piece together everything I can from that long-forgotten time, and try to rebuild that deck. I've tried in the past, but I've never really gotten it.

Perhaps it's impossible to recapture the joy of a first Magic deck, but I'm sure as hell gonna try.

I know for a fact that I don't have:

• Sigil of Distinction

• Sword of Vengeance

• Pristine Talisman (currently used in the Treva deck, I believe)

• Infectious Horror

I have replaced them with:

• Explorer's Scope (which I distinctly remember having back in the day anyways)

• Brass Squire

• Chief of the Foundry

• Hangarback Walker
