So first, i’ll do the deck updates, since I think that’s what everyone wants to see. Thanks a lot to the folks at r/mtgbrawl for helping out with suggestions:
And now, for the tournament report. Keep in mind that the third and second rounds happened late last night, so I may not remember all of it. The way the tournament was set up, the sixteen participants would be grouped into pods of four. The two last players remaining in each round one game would go on to round two, with randomly generated games out of the remaining eight. Then, the two remaining players of each semifinal would all play each other in the finals. I ended up getting second place in the finals, which is higher than my normal placing. Overall, I had a lot of fun, and met quite a few new people.
Round 1 was against a Zacama deck, another Muldrotha deck, and a Beckett Brass deck. The other Muldrotha deck got up to a bigger start than me, ramping to turn 4 Muldrotha, but I managed to swing the game in my favor. At one point, the Muldrotha player tried to convince the Zacama player, who got mana screwed, to help him, but I had a counteroffer up my sleeve. The Brass player was eliminated first by the Zacama player’s commander, followed by the Muldrotha player when the Zacama player used a Defiant Strike on my Ghalta for exact lethal. From there, it was easy taking care of the Zacama player, simply using the River's Rebuke I had been saving for the whole game. From there, me and the Zacama player proceeded to Round 2.
Round 2 was weird, since coincidentally, my opponents’ decks (Tayova, Kumena, and Lazav) were all from color combos that are a part of Sultai. After a good chuckle about that, we sat down. This is the point where I started getting tired and forgetting what happened, but i’ll try to remember as much as I can. I know that the Tatyova player became the archenemy, as they’re famous around the store for their Nexus of Fate *list* shenanigans. The game basically devolved into a 2vs2 between me and the Tatyova player, and the Kumena and Lazav players. I remember getting out Twilight Prophet, and then after the Kumena and Lazav players were eliminated, it was my turn. I vividly remember, during my upkeep, that the Tatyova player had way more resources than me, and would probbaly win next turn. But then I hit a Ghalta off of Prophet. The battles earlier had weakened my opponent, and him and I were off to the finals.
During the finals, it was me, the Tatyova player, a Rakdos player, and a Teferi player. We all couldn’t really do anything because of the Teferi player, so he went down first. Than, the Rakdos player was eliminated soon after. However, this time, I was not so lucky against the Tayova player. He managed to loop Nexus for six extra turns, and then just swung for game with all his creatures.
In the aftermath, I reviewed my deck, decided what changes to make, and went up to the counter to get some cards. Since I had some money to burn, I also decided to upgrade my commander to a foil Muldrotha. Overall, like I said earlier, I had a pretty great time, and i’ll definitely be using these tournaments as a way to keep pushing forward and experimenting with new things in my deck. Also, if you to know any of the decklists that the other players used against me, let me know. I talked to a few of them, and they’d be happy to share.
