Muldrotha, the Gravetide

These are personal ideas.

Cards with the A next to them are cards I am not 100% sure off.

I am very glad you have asked me this question! Sultai is the best! Sultai is life! Sultai is Death! Sultai is GOD!

  • Muldrotha won't be a broken commander since it has a CMC of 6 mana, unlike Karador, Ghost Chieftain it will continue to pay a mana tax but it has more interaction with the grave.

These cards are in Maybe and this is the reason why:

  • Sword of Feast and Famine: Best of the swords but I feel Bear Umbra does it's job a little bit better since it triggers on the attack. Since you can cast so many cards with your commander you need alot of mana between the 2 main phases. And both can be recast from the graveyard.
  • River Kelpie: Very good card for in this deck but I feel a little overkill in card draw (what? He must be ill, someone get him a doctor!). With his persist + Mikaeus, the Unhallowed it can be very hard to be removed but with Muldrotha, the Gravetide, your graveyard is technically your hand and with the Dredge mechanic it goes faster. The main reason why it is a Maybe and not a Main is because it's 5 CMC.
  • Path of Discovery: With each creature that enters the battlefield, you explore, it helps to throw stuff in the graveyard and makes your creatures grow, but there is allready so many options to throw cards in the graveyard that I made room for other cards. But I placed it in Maybe.

Hermit Druid's ability resolved, hope you have World Shaper and Phyrexian Altar in graveyard and Muldrotha, the Gravetide on the Battlefield + enough mana. Cast World Shaper as the creature and the Phyrexian Altar as the artifact, sacrifice World Shaper to the Phyrexian Altar and place all lands from your graveyard that were put there from Hermit Druid's ability on the battlefield.

Since the deck rellies on casting your cards from the graveyard, you need to fill that graveyard and there are many ways you can do this. In the Sultai colours, the main mechanics are Mill and Dredge.

When I was building this deck I thought about those 2 mechanics and felt like the Dredge mechanic was far better and much faster in Card Advantage.

Example: You cast a sorcery spell Tome Scour you throw the top 5 cards in your graveyard and it's gone. If you dredge Stinkweed Imp you mill 5 cards in your graveyard and gain 1 card in your hand and you can cast Stinkweed Imp and let it serve as a blocker. When it dies, you simply can Dredge again the next draw.

That being said: nothing beats Hermit Druid!

The Strengths

  • You have a huge Card Advantage when the Commander is on the battlefield.
  • Sultai are the best colours! Sultai is Life! Sultai is GOD!

The Weaknesses

  • Most of your Card Advantage comes from your graveyard thus exile graveyards effects could be a huge set back.
  • The card Back to Basics destroys the mana base since this deck only runs 3 Basic Lands. With Bitter Ordeal and Krosan Grip you should anticipate it and try to remove it before it shuts you down.
  • Your Card Advantage rellies on your Commander being on the battlefield and since the card itself has no protection, you need to create the protection and sometimes that protection comes to late. With a 6 CMC, after couple of removal spells, it becomes uncastable, this is where Command Beacon sees it's value.
  • Things that fly can hurt you, our best aerial defence is Stinkweed Imp.

First play (Commander was a proxy) in a 1 versus 1 against B/W Tymna the Weaver and Ravos, Soultender deck and ignoring the Duel Commander banlist (with Sol Ring, etc).

  • 13th of March 2018: The results were very bad. I lost both games. The problem in this match up was that the commander has no protection. The moment it was played, it got removed... The Partner commander player tactic was putting pressure early game by attacking my lifetotal. With Tymna the Weaver, he could draw an additional draw and having his removal at hand. Another weakness of the commander is, the moment it is played, he can't hardly cast anything that same turn so mana ramp is important or have Flash abilities like Leyline of Anticipation. My next game with this deck is Saturday 17th of March in a Multiplayer EDH game.
