Mono Blue Leovold, Anyone?
A fan of BDSM? Here's one of my recent homebrews that gives you that feeling of complete dominance and absolute control. It features
Narset, Parter of Veils
which is very reminiscent of
Leovold, Emissary of Trest
. Before it got banned in 2017, Leovold was performing quite well in cEDH. Its fast and devastatingly disruptive play made it very difficult to play against. And because its play targets opponents' hands, finding answers or simply getting back to a competitive board-state against Leovold decks was often next to impossible. When it finally got banned, a collective sigh of relief could be heard in a lot of EDH circles. I will be writing an deck tech on Leovold when I find the time but for those interested, here is a link to my old Leovold deck for the meantime: There is No Cow Level
Going back to Narset, I decided to make this deck's gameplay as close as I could to a Leovold deck. One big advantage we get since we are playing the Oathbreaker format is the access to a Signature Spell. This means having access to a wheel spell (
Windfall
) as soon as our Oathbreaker is in play. This gives us the ability to wreck hands and disable our opponents early in the game. From there, the objective is to keep opponent's locked down. We do this by aggressively searching for
Teferi's Puzzle Box
using our array of tutors and draw spells. With the Puzzle Box on the board, our opponents will find it nearly impossible to get back into the game.
Win Con
Keeping people locked out of the game is fun but we still need a way to end games. For this deck, win cons that worked well with wheel effects and card draws seemed ideal so I decided to go with
Psychic Corrosion
and
Psychosis Crawler
. Once in play, we can keep using wheel spells and effects to have one or both of these cards finish the game for us.
Although not the preferred method, we can also use
Tezzeret the Seeker
to turn all our artifacts into 5/5 face-breakers until the end of our turn.
The Deck
The deck is artifact-heavy mainly because we need mana rocks. Speed is key if we want to maximize the disruptive effects of our wheels. In games where we fail to get explosive openings, we will need to rely on sweepers like
Evacuation
,
Cyclonic Rift
and
Whelming Wave
. Aside from these, the rest of the deck is comprised of draw spells and tutors that will allow us to get to the core pieces of the deck as soon as possible.
That's pretty much all there is to say about the deck. The concept is quite simple but very effective. Got questions and suggestions? Please feel free to post them below.
