Boros style Soulfire grand master. Simply put. But a explanation is due for this deck. Ever since
Soulfire Grand Master
was released I absolutely wanted a playset of him. He was great when FRF was out and I'm looking to build a solid first deck in modern with him as a essential piece. The deck is a very aggro look with enough card support to keep it from running out of gas.
The pieces:
Creatures:
Monastery Swiftspear - Simple 1 drop with haste and prowess, gets really strong synergy with all the burn spells. A card that is very solid in burn decks right now.
Soulfire Grand Master
- Lifelink burn. Essentially makes our deck a little stronger against burn decks and of course is a important piece of the deck.
Vexing Devil - A great fit in most burn decks. Most of the time it's a 4 damage creature burn spell, great beater if not dealt with.
Ajani's Pridemate - The beneficiary of these life gain spells. Can turn into a creature with very solid size.
Burn:
Lightning Bolt - No explanation necessary.
Lightning Helix - Great spell that gives us life without Soulfire.
Rift Bolt
- Bit of a interesting fit, but it's essentially a delayed sorcery speed Lightning Bolt. I include it in some part because it can enable a little more burst on a turn by turn basis i.e. I can get 2 burn spells in a turn.
Magma Jet
- Lowest damage output of our burn spells, but probably the most useful because of the scry ability. Makes sure we get gas.
Boros Charm - Most versatile spell we got. Most of the time I'd suspect we use damage to a player, but double strike on a creature is useful, as is the occasional indestructibility.
The rest:
Path to Exile - Best removal in white. Might matter occasionally against the weird pro red creature. 3 I believe is sufficient for what I want to accomplish with it.
Chandra, Pyromaster
- Chandra fills our last slot. Her first two abilities are useful as she can remove a blocker or give you a extra card. 2 of her is plenty.
The Sideboard:
Blood Moon - Good against the zoo decks, hardly affects us.
Boros Charm - See above. Depending on the situation, it might be better to have a extra charm available.
Wear / Tear - Versatile as it get rids of artifacts and enchantments.
Guttural Response
- A surprise against control decks that want to beat us. Meant to confuse them and also makes leaving one mana up kinda of scary.
Flame Slash
- For bigger creatures.
Ghost Quarter - Doubles as a extra mana you can side in, should you be lacking mana, but also serves as land removal.
Pyroclasm - Hits token decks pretty hard. May affect us, but not in a major way.
Relic of Progenitus - For the graveyard hate.
Now what I'm looking for is suggestions for the sideboard. I feel that it is in a pretty weak state. Really the only things I'm sold on keeping are the blood moons, the charm, the wear//tear, and the ghost quarter (but I would also like a alternate suggestion to blood moon, because I won't be getting it for a while). Otherwise I'm open to suggestions. I'm also curious what you think about the pridemate. I'm debating if I should switch him out for something else. I'm trying to remain relatively budget here, so don't suggest a goblin guide. Again any comments and upvotes are appreciated.
