The Deck List

Last friday I played another FNM with the deck. For the deck list you can check the deck revisions on the deck's page. I have put a considerable amount of time in fine-tuning the deck list, but mostly the sideboard.

Before playing, I expected Storm, Hardened Scales, and any Tron deck to be the deck's worst match-ups in the current meta. This resulted in the inclusion of one Kambal, Consul of Allocation (for Storm), one Anguished Unmaking (for resolved Tron planeswalkers) and one Kataki, War's Wagefoil (for Hardened Scales).

The Matches

I played the following four matches:

  1. Esper Goryo's Vengeance (2-0): relatively easy match. The deck has surprisingly little interaction to get rid of my drainers and Hidden Stockpiles. Additionally he was playing the 'more fair' version with 4 Obzedat, Ghost Council and only one Griselbrand as Goryo's Vengeancefoil targets. I could slowly drain him to zero. Post-sideboarding I was able to Surgical Extraction his Obzedat, Ghost Council in reaction to his Goryo's Vengeancefoil. There was not much he could do.
  2. Hardened Scales (0-2): At home I thought that Kataki, War's Wagefoil would be a good third Stony Silence against the deck. However, I did not realize that this is only the case in combination with another Stony Silence, as Walking Ballistafoil will just blow his brains out as soon as he enters the battlefield. I did not draw any of my sideboard cards in game 2, but it was clear that Kataki, War's Wagefoil would not have done a lot. Both games were easy wins for the Hardened Scales deck.
  3. Storm (0-2): Opponent was playing a little chaotic (fidgeting with mana/storm dice while going off) and I was too tired to check that whatever he was doing was correct, but I did not feel like I did have any chance. These were two quick games.
  4. Jund Vengevine (1-1): match-up seems heavily in favour of me. However, the second game he started out with two Vengevine hitting hard on turn 2, and soon I was playing survival with only 3 to 5 life. Eventually he drew a Walking Ballistafoil just a few minutes before the round ended. I conceded to give him his third win of the evening.

The Changes

Boy, I was right about Storm and Hardened Scales being bad match-ups. Based on tonight I decided to make the following changes:

Mainboard

  • (+) 1 Hidden Stockpile: This card is so much better than I expected against most decks. Drawing two of them early is a great way to generate a lot of value, and playing four increases those odds by a nice margin.
  • (-) 1 Viscera Seer: As Hidden Stockpile also functions as additional sac outlets, albeit not free, playing four Viscera Seer seems a little redundant.

Sideboard

  • (+) 1 Damping Sphere: Helps a little against Storm and Tron. I will order several of them, so I can add more if the card pleases me. However, at the moment I will play only one, as I am not sure what to take out for multiples.
  • (+) 1 Kambal, Consul of Allocation: I have not drawn this card yet, but after reading into the card on the ModernMagic reddit, I am pretty sure I want to test with two of them. My deck has severe problems with Storm, because it does not pressure the deck enough. I am fine on the discard/removal front, but lacking a clock. This card will hopefully both buy me time, as well as pressure the opponent's life total. Additionally, it is good in a variety of match-ups.
  • (+) 1 Stony Silence: Arguably one of the best sideboard cards in the format, and a card I am repeatedly wishing to draw in several match-ups. I don't think it is a bad choice to add a third one.
  • (-) 1 Kataki, War's Wagefoil: I thought it would a fine card against Hardened Scales, but I changed my mind. Instead, a third Stony Silence is brought in to help against a broader selection of decks.
  • (-) 2 Burrenton Forge-Tender: Anger of the Gods is not a very popular card in the current meta, and I feel it just does not bring enough to the table. Freeing up these slots to bring in answers to other decks seems like the right choice to me.

Considerations

Apart from the changes mentioned above I am considering switching out a Fatal Push for another Path to Exile mainboard. This would bring the removal suit to a 3/3 split in the 75. For now I am staying on 4/2 I think, but I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Help Appreciated

I feel the deck is in a relatively good spot against most of the decks in the meta, but it has some (major) problems with some. If you have any advice regarding the deck in general, or specific match-ups I would love to hear it!

Hopefully I will be able to play again in two weeks with the new list.
