Deck updated and verified current as of 7/28/18.
The Deck
Phenax, God of Deception
deck focusing on cards that can grow based on how well I'm milling. Not too big on the attacks, so stay alive, hold on, and HAVE FUN!
Super Millers
Consuming Aberration
- Beast mode w/ Phenax. He always mill for double what he did before. DOUBLE. Not to mention his lame second ability...
Mindshrieker
- For you get a shot at greatness. This guy can get lucky and for a little bit of mana, mill like crazy. Or kill, never forget the killshot. This is instant speed pump. Sure you could hit an
Forest
, but you could also hit
Primal Surge
.
Mortivore
- A nice growing body that has :Regenerate. Classic.
Nighthowler
- Grows with creatures AND has Bestow. A nice way to recover after
Wrath of God
.
Wight of Precinct Six
- Sure it only says 'creatures in opponents graveyard' but he can exist in an empty graveyard state. And he's only 2cmc.
Bonehoard
- Essentially a
Nighthowler
with multiple iterations of bestow. AND it creates a little 0/0 germ.
Sewer Nemesis
- I have yet to obtain one. Haven't played it yet, so I cannot say how much I do or do not like it. I do mostly play multiplayer, so we'll see.
Super Synergy
Arbiter of the Ideal
- Phenax guarantees he'll be tapped, where you go from there is up to you.
Dimir Doppelganger
- "I can become anything in anyone's graveyard AND keep the ability to become something else."
Disciple of Deceit
- Phenax guarantees tap, she fixes situations. Have
Countermand
but need
Bonehoard
?
Evil Twin
- I am usually more inclined to copy one of my own creatures, but versatility is here.
Geth, Lord of the Vault
- This guy takes and takes again. Pull utility out of an opponents graveyard and put more fodder in.
King Macar, the Gold-Cursed
- Phenax taps, upon untap he destroys.
Siren of the Silent Song
- I like it.
Fallowsage
- Maybe a bit weak, but it mills for 2 and draws 1.
Surgespanner
- Again, a little weak. Mill 2 and bounce 1.
Undead Alchemist
- Power house! With all the mill, you'll no doubt create a horde of zombies. Either attack with them or mill with them.
Rite of Replication
- OMG, 6
Consuming Aberration
s!!! Seriously though, that's probably GG. 6 of most of my creatures is GG. 6 of any good creature is probably GG.
Undercity Informer
- I like to use this in response to my creatures going away. Remember, there are only so many lands in any given deck. See
Mind Grind
and
Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker
Altar of the Brood
- I smile when this is in my opening hand. Gets some fun wicked nasty synergy with
Undead Alchemist
.
Keening Stone
- I am torn by the raw power of this card. I play this tight in the hand as it usually draws the table my direction once played. Con. However, I just need half your library milled to kill you. Pro.
Kritter Kontrol
Avatar of Woe
- Tap to kill? What are the chances we are going to hit 10 creatures in graveyards... hmmm...
Visara the Dreadful
- Tap to kill?
Royal Assassin
- I go back and forth with this. No toughness for Phenax. But a GREAT rattlesnake for threatened attacks.
Archfiend of Depravity
- I might be confused, but when I saw this card for $.50, I bought 10. It may never see huge prices, but I'll gladly include one in every black deck I ever build.
God Cards
Umbral Mantle
- untap and give +2/+2... so more mill every time you pay .
Sword of the Paruns
- Initially you'd think I like this card less. But more often than not, I like it more. Sure its toughness bonus goes away when you tap a creature, but its still to untap. Also, are you being attacked with trample? +0/+2. Do you want your commander to be an awesome indestructible blocker? +2/+0.
Have
Phenax, God of Deception
in play. Have one of these in play. Have
Consuming Aberration
,
Arbiter of the Ideal
,
King Macar, the Gold-Cursed
,
Avatar of Woe
, etc.
Honorable Mention
Belltower Sphinx
- Flying, mills for 5, decent blocker.
Circu, Dimir Lobotomist
- Pseudo-terrible card for this deck, but I love the card and I love the flavor. It stays.
Dread
- Mills for 6 and makes opponents think twice about attacking me. Oh yeah, and it shuffles back if I mill it from myself.
Mesmeric Orb
- Initially it seems like a bad idea until you read
Mortivore
,
Nighthowler
, and
Bonehoard
Dreamborn Muse
- See the orb.
Extractor Demon
- 5/5 flying blocker, mills for 5. Oh and he mills too.
Havengul Lich
- I can cast any blue/black/artifact creature from any graveyard?
Hedron Crab
- Aint he cute?
Jace's Phantasm
- My, how quickly they grow up.
Lazav, Dimir Mastermind
- There are legitimate arguments why this guy should be the commander. Not as much fun for me, but that doesn't mean he isn't in here.
Lich Lord of Unx
- This guy has FUN written all over him! (in sharpie)
Mind Grind
- Probability again. For arguments sake, lets say your average deck is 1/3 lands. Every after the initial cost says "mill for 3".
Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker
- See above, except it reads "attack and mill for 12".... essentially
Nemesis of Reason
- Attack mill for 10 or tap and mill for 7. 5 cmc.
Oona, Queen of the Fae
- Now what to do with all that extra mana lying around. Make millers!
Riddlekeeper
- A face only a mother could love, but an ability that I can love.
Wrexial, the Risen Deep
- Don't understand the name but I do understand the card. At the very least, it mills for 8 at 6 cmc and 3 devotion for Phenax.
Ghastlord of Fugue
- Flavor and Devotion, in no particular order.
Whip of Erebos
- Its no secret... you are going to get attacked. May as well give all your creatures lifelink. Oh and resurect a
Consuming Aberration
that was hit with
Terminate
to mill or attack (with lifelink).
The Rest
If a card isn't mentioned still, I probably am open to remove it or its use is so fundamentally obvious that its not worth explaining.
The End
Thanks for looking! And as always, if you like it please +1!!! If you have a suggestion/comment, PLEASE leave it! I always enjoy reading comments/suggestions.
