Paper Pauper Mono-U Infinite Combo/Tokens
Mono-Blue Battered Golem + Banishing Knack + Tooth of Chiss-Goria + Golem Foundry = Infinite golems

The Concept:

  • Dig in for the long haul, this is a midrange, combo deck. Start by getting some Islands and Seat of the Synods out.
  • Use Skyline Cascade and Stoic Rebuttal to keep you safe as you assemble your combo pieces. Remember that Banishing Knack's and Retraction Helix's ability can remove your opponent's stuff too, so they can be used as combat tricks in addition to combo pieces.
  • Draw cards for cheap with Thoughtcast, Machinate and Lonely Sandbar. These will help you dig for combo pieces.
  • Drift of Phantasms is not only a good blocker, but more importantly it can be used to tutor any other -drop. Which is good, because almost ALL of the important cards in this deck have CMC 3.
  • Battered Golem is the main piece, with Zephyr Scribe as the backup. These creatures will untap themselves whenever you cast a (noncreature) artifact.
  • Tooth of Chiss-Goria and its backup Scale of Chiss-Goria are noncreature artifacts. They are "free" to cast because of their Affinity for artifacts, _and_ they can be cast at instant-speed, leaving less room for opponents to interrupt your combo.
  • Banishing Knack and its backup Retraction Helix, give a creature the ability to bounce any nonland permanent back to its owner's hand.
  • The last piece of the combo is Golem Foundry, which sadly has no true backup. However, I consider the tutors as my effective fallback here, so I still have "more than four cards" that can help me assemble my combo.
  • Casting artifacts puts charge counters on Golem Foundry which can be cashed in for golem tokens. Unfortunately playing your artifact lands will _not_ trigger this, but oh well. It takes 3 charge counters to make one token, but when you're generating infinite charge counters, it's not so bad.

The Combo:

  1. Cast Battered Golem, Tooth of Chiss-Goria and Golem Foundry.
  2. Cast Banishing Knack on Battered Golem. Battered Golem now has the ability to ": return target nonland permanent to its owner's hand" for the rest of the turn.
  3. Tap Tooth of Chiss-Goria to give one of your other creatures +1/+0 until end of turn.
  4. Respond to that resolving by tapping Battered Golem and bouncing Tooth of Chiss-Goria back to your own hand.
  5. Cast Tooth of Chiss-Goria again at instant-speed, which triggers Battered Golem's native ability, putting it on the stack above the Tooth. Ultimately, this will _also_ trigger a charge counter on Golem Foundry.
  6. Let Battered Golem's ability _and_ the Tooth of Chiss-Goria (and the charge counter) resolve.
  7. Battered Golem has not left the battlefield and it's still the same turn, so it still has the ability to bounce stuff. Therefore, "in response" to the Tooth resolving, start the whole process all over again at Step 3.
  8. Generate a large number of charge counters in this manner, cash them in for tokens, then pass the turn to your opponent.
  9. If your opponent doesn't win on the spot, on your next turn you can swing out with a million golems for the win.
  10. Alternatively, you can do all of this during the Combat Phase, before damage is resolved. Each time you use the Tooth's ability, target an unblocked attacker for an arbitrarily large amount of damage.

Updates Add

Streamlined this deck by taking out white altogether, and "doubling up" on essential combo pieces.

Now, all the combo pieces in this deck have a "number 5-7" counterpart. For instance, I use 4x Banishing Knack as well as 3x Retraction Helix to ensure I draw it each game.

Golem Foundry has no real equivalent in pauper, from what I can tell, and I could use that creature that does that thing when artifact stuff happens, but instead I'm leaning on Drift of Phantasms which actually serves multiple functions. It not only can tutor the Foundry, but most of my other combo pieces, as well serve as a good flying blocker in a pinch.

Of course, now I'm looking at Nettle Drone and saying to myself, hmmm. This deck will probably end up Izzet-colored in the future.

I like red.
