Intro

Most of the Maelstrom recipes I see are based on one of 3 things:

Dragons: Cast dragons with synergies with other dragons (Atarka, the World Render or things like Dragon Tempest) and boom.

Extra Turns: Cast the Maelstrom Wanderer with mass removal + extra turns. Why do you want opponents when you can play vs the walls? Yay! Cool! Yeah! u’R a sKilLeD PlAYeR. (Maybe you can guess my opinion about this).

Big Spells: Have things that cost more than the Maelstrom but not because it’s fun, it’s cuz ur so amazing than the others didn’t see that you’re a genius. “Hey, look at me! I’m playing Omnipotence / Planar Bridge / Blasphemous Act! I’m the first player doing it! I’m so cool and creative making decks”.

And I have something to say about these three ways of creating a Maelstrom deck… They are BORING (except the dragon one, that might be good. But I don’t usually like tribal decks).

Strategy

The main strategy for this recipe is, as I like to call it: RAMP & SMASH. Cast things that give you mana (mana dorks like Birds of Paradise, enchantments like Burgeoning, mana rocks, spells like Kodama’s Reach), card advantage (like Temur Ascendancy, Sylvan Library, Nezahal the Primal Tide). Suggestion for the mulligans: Your starting hand needs at least 2-3 lands and 1 ramp/card advantage spell. The rest of the things, as Baloo Bear says in “Bare Necessities” song: “The bare necessities of life will come to you”.

Everything in the deck costs less than the Maelstrom Wanderer, so when you cast it, you can cast anything the cascade shows (except one thing added since commander legends Apex Devastator. That card is stupid in this deck. Is the only reason I include in, the other versions always have cards with lesser CMC).

Alternative Gameplay

Fun Gameplay Suggestion: When I play with my playgroup I have a “sideboard” with a bunch of great cards (you can check some cards from the maybeboard for examples). Before starting a match, remove some cards from the deck and put them onto that “sideboard” pool, shuffle it and add random cards from there to the main deck until you reach the 99 card limit (if you want more mystery you can add it without seeing it). Every game you have different creatures / spells (I suggest that don’t remove lands from the main deck to play in this way, you might be mana screwed [or do it. I’m a text, not your parent]).

No Fun Gameplay Suggestion: If you want to be a douchebag you should try this options I give to you:

  • Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir + Knowledge Pool.
  • Extra turns (as I said at the beginning).
  • Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Zealous Conscripts.
  • Great-Oak Guardian + Splinter Twin.
  • Food Chain…
  • Massive removal spells (like All Is Dust / Jokulhaups)

Changes

Expensive changes:

  • Valakut Awakening =>The Great Henge. This card, like the Apex Devastator, is an exception. The Apex and the Great Henge are the two cards I admit at my deck.
  • Tempt with Discovery => Oracle of Mul Daya. You play with the top revealed, but you can play lands from the top (raaamp).

Cheap changes: I put here some of the cards I found quite expensive (some of the cards in the original list were cheap at the time the deck was created…)

  • Sylvan Library => Elemental Bond
  • Scourge of the Throne => Gratuitous Violence
  • Pathbreaker Ibex => Thunderfoot Baloth
  • Apex Devastator => Etherium-Horn Sorcerer
  • Song of the Dryads => Lignify
  • Chromatic Lantern => Gilded Lotus
  • Shocklands => Bounce lands (Simic Growth Chamber, Gruul Turf and Izzet Boilerworks).
  • Wooded Foothills => Evolving Wilds and changing a few lands to have it more basic lands (you can remove the filter lands to add it more basics i.e.).
  • Tooth and Nail => Brutalizer Exarch. You can put any creature from your deck ready to be played with the cascades.
  • Vivien, Monsters’ Advocate => Prime Speaker Vannifar
  • Balefire Dragon => Steel Hellkite

End

And that’s all from this deck. I’ve been playing this deck since 2015 and it’s my favourite by far. I saw a ton of spells for it, played against all styles (stax, hard control, aggro, combo...) but I’m sure I missed some amazing cards to add it to the deck. So if you have any suggestion for the deck (without removing the style I want for it) go ahead and tell me.
