PYROMANTIC VALUE, a (very budget) QUEST MAGIC deck

Quest Magic Budget Burn Casual Mono-Red

Agrippa91

I finally found it! QUEST MAGIC: The Mtg RPG! is a game I played years ago and barely remember details, but what I do remember is having tons of fun despite my deck (Legacy Grixis Control) being way too strong. So feel free to tag along as I revisit this classic that, despite having some bugs now due to tappedout's new website design, will still be tons of fun I'm sure! I'll be playing with a friend and will link to newer versions of my deck before writing a short synopsis about what happened in the last session.

This deck has some of my favorite red cards, basically none of them competitive in burn (any longer), and a cool new card in Magmatic Channeler that I'm particularly excited of playing with. In order for this to be a bit more of a challenge this time, I put some restrictions as to what I allowed myself to have in my starting deck:

  1. It had to be monoclored with only basics to start with (one can buy a few utility cards and nonbasic lands in the game later)
  2. It had to be budget (you can get every card for 50cts or less)
  3. It had to have a theme (in this case "fire spells", so no Monastery Swiftspear or Lightning Bolt)
  4. It had to be Modern legal (no Faithless Looting or Fireblast for me!)
  5. No free spells allowed (so no Lava Dart)
  6. No starting sideboard (you're able to buy stuff ingame, for now Molten Rain isn't too bad maindeck and fits the theme)

So I tried to build a relatively straightforward deck that has a cool gameplan (use red instants and sorceries to get value from my creatures), has some utility (Molten Rain and Pillar of Flame) and isn't running out of things to do should the game go longer (Firebolt, Chandra's Phoenix, Magmatic Channeler).

I built this deck before finding the game btw, now that I know the rule with preparation turns I can't help but feel that my primary gameplan of tempoing my opponents out will fall flat in later levels. I was tempted to switch out Fated Conflagration with the on-theme Cathartic Pyre, but ultimately decided against it. Not only do I not have good targets besides Chandra's Phoenix and arguably Firebolt, I also want to stop min-maxing so much before the quest even started. I'm sure I'll get plenty of good splash spells later. I'm particularly looking forward to picking up Lightning Helix and Electrolyze as they're old cards that I'm pretty sure can be obtained in Ravnica. I also can't help but think that a card like Diabolic Edict will be needed later on against creatures that are just too big to be burned (I don't remember much from last time ~10 years ago, but parts of Zendikar stuck to my mind).

Comments are appreciated, but it nobody watches this it's fine, too. I'm doing this more for myself than anybody else.
