This is my first attempt of building a deck since I started playing again. I played from Revised through Odyssey and then I quit, now I'm coming back to the game and I wanted to try my hand at building a Standard deck.
The idea of this deck is to stall the game a little with the black discard, until you have enough tools to win the game in one or two turns. It's supposed to be a fun, kitchen table deck. I don't really understand how the competitive meta works, so I have no idea if this deck is at a competitive level, but I had fun playing with it on my tests and I'm hoping to take it to a FNM as soon as I can.
The main victory condition of this deck is having Berserkers' Onslaught
+
Foul-Tongue Shriek
+
Magmatic Chasm
+ 3 or more creatures on the battlefield. Cast Magmatic Chasm to stop your opponent from blocking, attack with all of the creatures you have on the battlefield, and they should deal double damage with Berserkers' Onslaught. Add
Foul-Tongue Shriek
for more burn and if everything resolves properly, you should have a one turn victory or at least a really hard hit.
That is not the only victory condition on the deck, though. There's enough burn to lower your opponent's life enough so you can close up with Magmatic Chasm + attacking creatures. There's also some enhancements like
Goblin War Paint
and
Brute Strength
so you can hit harder or deal with bigger creatures.
I'm still working on the sideboard and it should be up soon. I am aware that this deck shouldn't go too well against control decks and I'm not too sure of how it will fare against other aggro or ramp decks, but I'm leaning towards removing the discard component of the deck in favor of a little control for the sideboard. Since this is my first deck, any tips on how to make it better or more viable will be appreciated.
Here are some other bullet points about the deck. If I think of anything else, I'll add it later:
The main creature of this deck is BloodmaD VampireS. Try to protect them until you have a Magmatic Chasm and/or Drana, Liberator of Malakir to boost them.
Pyre Hound
also works really well with the burn and discard spells of the deck.
Ember-Eye Wolf
will be the early game creature, along with
Returned Centaur
.
Deadbridge Shaman
is cannon fodder, since you can only trigger its ability when it dies.
Always try to cast Fall of the Titans for its surge cost, otherwise, it will be too expensive and lose effectiveness.
To turn Chandra in one turn, after you cast the spell, put a
Goblin War Paint
on her. Use her tap ability, then cast a burn spell, untap Chandra and use her tap ability again, then cast another burn spell, which will untap Chandra and allow you to deal 3 points of damage with her active abilty. Of course, you can use any other red spell you have on your hand to do so.
If you don't have enough mana or spells to turn Chandra in one turn, at least save a
Goblin War Paint
to raise her toughness and protect her. The haste will also help you getting that damage she needs to turn going.
I put
Deadbridge Shaman
on this deck so I could sacrifice it with
Tormented Thoughts
. If you have a
Brute Strength
on your hand, cast it on Deadbrige Shaman to boost it to 6/2 and use
Tormented Thoughts
to make your opponent discard 7 cards in one play.
Drana, Liberator of Malakir
+
Magmatic Chasm
will help boost your creatures, specially the BloodmaD VampireS.
Speaking of which, if you have Berserkers' Onslaught and Magmatic Chasm, you can really boost them up by making them do double damage.
Flameblade Angel
will be worthless if you don't have many creatures on the battlefield and if your opponent is not blocking your creatures. It's too expensive for her stats alone and if you don't meet these conditions, her ability is useless. I'll probably move them to the Sideboard once I figure out what to put on her place and run some tests. Otherwise, if your enemy can block you, it's a great card to have on your battlefield to help with the burn.
