Replicating Golems and Hungry Elementals

I made this deck to prove my friend wrong that the only way to play blue well is to be an asshole with counterspells. I proved him wrong on the counterspell part, not the asshole part. The only counterspell in this deck is Muddle the Mixture, which is usually used to transmute for Isochron Scepter. With Nivmagus serving as the only creature with CMC < 4, this deck kind of sucks without Sol Ring, but I always request permission to use it. I replace it with weaker mana ramp like Palladium Myr. Synergy:

  • Nivmagus Elemental + Precursor Golem : An all-you-can-eat buffet of instants for Nivmagus Elemental , who can eat all replicated spell effects I cast on Precursor Golem and its token copies, plus Solemn Simulacrum or any other Golems Out there. It gets ridiculous and mathematically complicated when you consider Mirrorweave turning every creature into Golems (and don't forget to gobble up the extraneous Mirrorweave copies!) Oh btw, you can eat Gigadrowse as many times as you replicate it! Let's say you have a Precursor and 2 tokens out. Replicate for 3, that's 12 spells for four mana. Eat 8 of them (leave the original plus its 3 replications so the copies go on the stack) to give Nivmagus +16/+16 for 4 mana. Not bad if you ask me. Oh, and I'm still not sure on the ruling if there are multiple precursors out, if you replicate the spell for each precursor, but if every creature becomes a precursor Golem, things might get ugly.

  • Another fun option when Nivmagus isn't around, is to replicate spell effects and abuse them other ways. Cast Polymorph on your Golem, draw a card for each Solemn Simulcrum in the battlefield, and search your library for a land to put into the battlefield for each new Simulacrum that pops into the battlefield (Polymorph is another fun card to abuse with Mirrorweave, btw.) Cast Shadow Rift on your Golem, give them all shadow and draw a card for each. Same thing with Call to Heel , which is also good safeguard against destroy effects. Give them all flying with Trickery Charm (sideboard). Banishing Knack to turn them all into Into the Roil s.

  • When giant elementals fail, and golems just aren't cutting it, sometimes it's better just to swarm them with numbers. That's where plan B comes in: use your spells to generate drakes with Talrand, Sky Summoner. I usually reserve the drakes for chump blockers, but 2/2 fliers can really add up.
