Rings of Oblivion

Modern* Budget Enchantment

Cheldra

Maybeboard

A sorcery speed control deck that can win by beatdown or combo.

The central interaction in the deck is Auratog with one of Oblivion Ring, Detention Sphere or Journey to Nowhere. By saccing the enchantment while it's first ability is on the stack, you can exile the target forever. Unfortunately, this doesn't work with more recent enchantments like Stasis Snare, as they have only one ability. Once you have Starfield of Nyx, this becomes exile a non-land permanent at the beginning of each of your upkeeps.

The Win-Cons:

  • Disruptive beatdown with Auratog and Grim Guardian while exiling your opponent's permanents.

  • Sudden swinging with an activated Starfield of Nyx. This also allows your Nyx-Fleece Rams to attack, and boosts the power of Grim Guardian

  • Infinite life loss using a loop of 3 Oblivion Rings or 2 Oblivion Rings and a Detention Sphere with a Grim Guardian. This loop is difficult to suddenly initiate, as you first have to target one of your rings with a ring, which may free something you don't want freed and prevents you from using your ring to exile something else. So, it is best done by playing two rings in one turn.

The Support

  • Zur the Enchanter provides a tutor for the combo pieces, or can just be used to exile a creature each attack.

  • Nyx-Fleece Ram provides some survivability against aggro decks that this would otherwise be very weak to.

  • Demonic Pact is very effective in grindy matchups, as it is often a 5 for 1. It is also completely safe to play when you have an Auratog out already.

Recommendations would be greatly appreciated, especially for the sideboard.
