Description

A competitive Gruul stax deck that uses land destruction and good ol' beats to bring the hurt.

Introduction

If you've ever had a problem with those pesky blue players or have gotten sick and tired of losing to fast combo, stop and give me a look over. You might find something you like.

This has been my baby for the past couple of years. Originally, I had been playing RG Beats but as my local playgroup became more competitive, I started to lose. A lot. Losing to combo, most commonly spell-based decks with blue, became a common nightmare for me despite having Ruric-Thar at the helm. Eventually, I cracked and started putting in the time and money to make this a deck that could compete. Since then, it's evolved into a wonderfully punchy stax deck.

Wincons Include: -Kiki + Conscripts -Ruric + Possiblity Storm -Shaman of the Forgotten Ways -MLD + Planeswalkers/Titania
Decks in my Current Meta: - Azami, Lady of Scrolls (Lab Maniac Combo) - Karador, Ghost Chieftain (Boonweaver Combo) - Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder (Wheels) - Emrakul, the Promised End (Artifact Ramp) - Trostani, Selesnya's Voice (Aetherflux Tokens) - Atraxa, Praetors' Voice Infect Stax)

The sideboard section of the deck was created after a VERY corner case involving a Burning Wish that got copied and I whiffed on because I didn't "officially" have a sideboard for the deck. More importantly, the sideboard lists cards that I carry with the deck that will help it adapt to changing and new metas when I travel or feel like switching things up. It also includes cards that I feel are on the cusp and am testing.

Many thanks to tw0handt0uch for the blueprint list and added help along the way. Moving forward, I hope to do a better job of tracking this deck and it's progress. Maybe I'll write a primer if people happen to want one considering that I haven't found a Deck Primer for Ruric-Thar LD Stax. Just a lot of fairly generic RG goodstuff. If anyone has recommendations or ideas, please let me know in the comments. Feedback, good or bad, is always appreciated as is the occasional upvote!

CURRENT CONSIDERATIONS: In conversation with tw0handtouch, we've come around to the idea of testing Emrakul, the Promised End as a possible finisher. I have no idea how the card is going to work but I'm going to try it out for a bit and see how it does. There has also been talk of playing the Ramunap+Stripmine+Oracle package to add to our land hate. Not sure if we need it but I might try it.

LATEST UPDATES: Well, I picked up a few new cards for the deck which I'll be slotting in over next few weeks. I've decided to cut Craterhoof Behemoth which may just be incorrect but we shall see (plus I need Hoofy Boi for the new Yisan deck I'm building :P) In place of the Hoofster, I've decided to slot in the Dualcaster+Twinflame combo which has really shined so far. Having the ability to combo out in two different ways gives this deck some redundancy and since we're Gruul, having multiple avenues to winning is important because our draw dependency. I'm also lowered the number of utility creatures and ramp/dork package. I'm still figuring out the perfect mixture of the two so stay tuned about how that's going to go.
