I made this deck when I got inspired by a deck one of my friends uses for modern, focusing around controlling the opponent with Isochron Scepter while making tokens to kill the opponent. I decided to change the deck a little, switching out the token strategy for burn.
Isochron Scepter is key to this deck and it is a good idea to have at least one in your opening hand. My main control engine is a combo of Silence and Grand Abolisher, which completely locks your opponent out of the game when Silence is imprinted on the scepter. I also run Path to Exile and
Dawn Charm
for further control if the aforementioned combo cannot be set up quickly.
Once your opponent has been oppressed with the control spells your win condition is burning them to death, whether with an Isochron Scepter or manually. Lightning Bolt, Lightning Helix, Magma Jet, Boros Charm and
Lash Out
gives you plenty of options, though
Lash Out
isn't guaranteed to hit face. I'm not running blue so my means of digging for scepters and spells is fairly limited. I chose the scry 2 on Magma Jet over a draw spell like Faithless Looting due to the extra control scrying gives you over your draws and the added burn effect on Magma Jet. Also, since it is an instant, it can be used with Isochron Scepter.
Isochron Scepter can also abuse the split cards that have one half that is converted mana cost 2 or less.
Research/Development
and
Odds/Ends
are both the most powerful of these in my mind as they give extremely good effects for two mana. However they are useless without Isochron Scepter in this build as I am not running dual lands, with the purpose of keeping the deck fairly cheap. This means that I am only running four of these split cards.
Speaking of lands, my land base is pretty simple, with basic Plains and Mountains supplying my mana. However I also ran a playset of Buried Ruin in case my opponent somehow manages to destroy my scepter.
