Sheoldred, the Apoca-Lich

Commander / EDH Mono-Black

Pox22

I have always been on the hunt for a good commander to put Lich effects to good use, and then WotC drops Sheoldred, the Apocalypse and Queza, Augur of Agonies in the same year! Both draw the deck with a Lich effect out, but Sheoldred is more consistent and a bit faster due to easier mana requirements.

How does this win? With Sheoldred and a Lich effect, drawing a card or gaining life starts off a loop of life gain triggers that draw you cards which create more life gain triggers. When you're about half-way through the deck, you need to sacrifice Sheoldred because you have another 18-22 triggers to resolve that will draw the rest of the deck. Drop Defense Grid for good measure, then cast Sickening Dreams for 70-80 to kill the table. The game will end before Lich makes you sacrifice permanents, and the discard from Sickening Dreams will satisfy the replacement effects of Nefarious Lich and Lich's Mastery.

This is why there are some odd-looking card choices. You need one of the three Liches, an immediate way of drawing a card or gaining life, and then you need to have instant-speed means of getting rid of Sheoldred in the top half or so of the deck.
