This deck plans to utilize the heroic mechanic to the fullest extent, boros weenie style. This deck generally wins on turns 4-6, and games rarely go on for longer than that (unless it is against a particularly rough control matchup) I am pretty happy with the list, but comments and criticism are still a huge help.
The Creatures:
Akroan Crusader
and Young Pyromancer: The engines of the deck. The crusader lets the heroic action happen as early as turn 2 if necessary, as well as providing another body to attack or chump block. Young Pyromancer does the same thing, but has the bonus of not needing to be targeted to provide a token.
Favored Hoplite
: Yet another T1 hero, who can attack fearlessly into battle when triggered
Anax and Cymede and
Phalanx Leader
: Turn your measly 1/1 tokens into a legion of trampling threats!
The Enablers:
Coordinated Assault
and
Martial Glory
: Each of these spells provides a heroic trigger to two creatures at once. In addition, they are all instants, which makes combat very difficult for your opponent. (Don't forget that these also can make your heroic creatures trigger at instant speed.)
Gods Willing
: Heroic trigger
Support:
Boros Charm: The charm is a very different card from the rest of the instants. In addition to giving double strike (and triggering heroic), it gets our team to survive
Supreme Verdict
and Anger of the Gods (which can both ruin this decks day), AND can finish off our opponent when they're on their last legs.
Chained to the Rocks
: A one mana Journey to Nowhere. Nuff said.
Magma Jet
: This card is just all-around awesome. Removing your opponents creatures is good, and setting up your next few turns is even better. Don't be afraid to cast it on your opponent to get the scry, or even on your own creature to activate heroic.
Sideboard:
This is a breakdown of what I would sideboard in and out against different archetypes.
Aggro: +4
Boros Reckoner
, -4
Gods Willing
I think this deck is pretty well poised against aggro, with 4
Magma Jet
and 4 Anax and Cymede, but hopefully
Boros Reckoner
can give this deck the edge.
Gods Willing
Doesn't do a whole lot, but you could consider keeping it if it's mono-coloRED.
Midrange: +3 Mizzium Mortars, +2 Assemble the Legion, -4
Magma Jet
, -1
Coordinated Assault
Probably this decks worst matchup. Mizzium Mortars takes out their guys, but is also the only card that can deal with Stormbreath Dragon and Blood Baron of Vizkopa. The extra
Gods Willing
is to fend off their targeted removal. Without small creatures,
Magma Jet
is a lot less useful, and the first-strike that
Coordinated Assault
provides is a lot less relevant.
Control: +2
Glare of Heresy
+2 Assemble the Legion, +2 Pithing Needle -2
Magma Jet
-4
Chained to the Rocks
Fairly straightforward.
Glare of Heresy
for Detention Sphere, other lockdown auras, and Elspeth. Obviously if you're up against a non-white form of control,
Glare of Heresy
is a lot worse. Pithing Needle is great against planeswalkers and underwold connections. Asssemble the Legion is a hard to deal with threat that is our wincon if hey remove all of our creatures. Boros Charm is great against board wipe. (It's not in the sideboard but it's worth mentioning)
Magma Jet
comes out for the same reason as against midrange, and the same goes for
Chained to the Rocks
Other: ???
You never know what crazy brews people can come up with, but just in case I have Wear / Tear for hexproof auras, Trading Post decks, and anything else awesome that you might see at your FNM. It's personal preference, but you can take these out If you would rather have some other sideboard card.
