Sure, I'll Put My Genius on Hold for Awhile

Casual Midrange Ramp RUG (Temur)

Emrakool

Sideboard

Blast of Genius + Worldspine Wurm = Major Pain.

Here's a brew that I've been cooking up for Return to Ravnica/Theros Standard, centered around a RUG Midrange build. Niv-Mizzet was smoking some of that Frankenstein shit with Alex, Dante and the Doctor when he discovered an ingenious combo! He then went to visit the Simic Labs where he and his research team developed a new brand of Mad-Bio Science!

The deck name was inspired by a line from the movie Grandma's Boy. For those of you who haven't seen it, I suggest you do so as it appeals to the gamer nerd in all of us. But for now it's time to take this deck on a fantastic RUG carpet ride with Unexpected Results around every turn!

Check out the crazy interactions!

Reveal a creature card, cast it without paying its mana cost and get a 3/3 Beast token.

Reveal a noncreature, nonland card, cast it without paying its mana cost and put another three +1/+1 counters on a creature I control.

Reveal a land card, put it onto the battlefield and gain 3 life. Return Unexpected Results to my hand.

My deck got featured in an article! Zykes was piloting the original version of this deck at one of his local events and happened to get paired up against Matt Jones, writer for www.hipstersofthecoast.com. Matt was fascinated by the pure jankiness of the deck. You can read the article here.

Suggestions and +1s are appreciated. :)

With the new set release I've started to do a bit more evaluation and have come to the following conclusions...

  • Niv-Mizzet 2.0 isn't Niv-Mizzet 1.0, and I don't have any infinite mana combo to make use of him. So I'm literally going to put my genius on hold, in the sideboard where he belongs.

  • Chromatic Lantern is too slow for my needs, despite completely fixing any mana issues I may come across.

  • Anger of the Gods is a necessary evil. This deck can't handle being swarmed in 4 turns or less, so whatever sacrifice I make of my mana dorks is still putting me ahead of the curve. Unfortunately it only amounts to discard fodder against most midrange or control decks.

  • Four Stormbreath Dragons are better than two. It's my only flying creature, and it absolutely kicks ass with Master Biomancer. A surprisingly aggressive card for a not so aggressive deck, but it's right at home playing offense or defense as needed.

  • Ral Zarek is fun in a controlled board state. Not so much if I have to rely on him to defend myself. Perhaps he'll find a home in the sideboard.

  • Xenagos, the Reveler is a token and mana machine. I'll take pooping out chump blockers for free over his counterpart's untap and burn shenanigans. His +1 allows me to cast the huge stuff extra early, and his -6 can put me over the top in tight games.

  • Kiora's Follower does for me what Ral Zarek does, but earlier. Not only do I get a 2nd mana dork out of the deal, I now have 4 more opportunities to untap Mercurial Chemister for sexy time!

  • Borborygmos Enraged + Enter the Infinite make for a fun alternate win condition. I can even use Mercurial Chemister to draw and feed Bobo as needed.
