Tax the Poor, Then Deprive Them

Casual Budget Casual Control Mono-Blue

In a small high school or boy scout troop near you, there is probably a small cache of some nerds who play magic. In each little group there is a top dog who thinks he/she/they is the best magic player in a ten mile radius. They are so good that their friends beg them not to use hard decks against them, or to use handicaps like no planeswalkers.

In this particular group, our alpha is named Jimmy. (and is probably a boy)

Now, one day Jimmy made an announcement to the group that he hated cards that deprived you of your abilities, especially the Winter Orb.

That's when Slim Jim walked in, all cool and swagger, and challenged Jimmy to a game right on the spot. Slim Jim even said he would play with the handicap of four Winter Orbs. The one odd rule Slim Jim had to his challenge was, no conceding.

Jimmy said, "I accept your challenge, but I will have you know that I have my Dad's personalized deck that he made just for me, which has over powered cards like Godsire and Sandwurm Convergence! What do you have?"

Slim Jim of course had the very deck you are looking at, because why else would I be telling this story?

Slim Jim and Jimmy sat down for their match. Ten minutes later, Jimmy had effectively peed his pants and was begging Slim Jimmy to stop this horrible torture. His friends watched in awe as Jimmy grovelled before Slim Jim and begged for his forgiveness, loudly proclaiming that Winter Orb is the best thing to ever touch the world of Magic: The Gathering.

Why would he do this? Read on and allow me to bestow my wisdom onto you.

Winter Orb is just a beautiful card. It slows down the game and gives cheaper decks the advantage in the long run. But wouldn't it be nice if only your opponent faced the hardships of this orb?

That is the magic of this deck! Basically every creature has some artifact tapping/untapping artifact function to it so by the end of your turn The Orb is untapped, but by the time it rolls around to your turn, the orb is tapped and you are happy.

Now there is one more pretty function to this deck that I think you will like. Naturally, your opponent is going to try to eliminate or work around your Orb. Why give them the chance? Your prey is weak, so spend less on counter spells to completely ice over your opponent. Disperse cards back to their hands so they have to start all over again when it comes to saving up mana. If all else fails, Ice Floe.

Under no circumstances are you to end your turn without being prepared to tap the Orb when it comes time to be your upkeep.

Fun tidbit of information, Metallic Rebuke serves as a fun way to tap Winter Orb with a nice little something called improvisation.

I do need some help on this deck, because Jimmy is just a twelve year old boy who thinks Godsire is better than Goblin Guide, so making him grovel was not much of an accomplishment.
