Or: Seriously, how has this deck name not been taken already?
Four color control, using
Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas
to turn your Darksteel Citadel into an indestructible threat. Or make any of your artifacts into threats, really.
Ever beat someone over the head with a Thopter Foundry for the win?
~Card Choices~
Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas
:
This, my friends, is what sets this deck apart. This deck is impossible to discuss without a full understanding of what Tez can do. His +1 is great, but it's all about his -1.
It is important to note that though the artifact becomes a creature, nothing else about it changes. That means that, for example:
Darksteel Citadel is an indestructible 5/5 creature.
Spellskite retains it's ability to redirect spells.
Chalice of the Void retains it's ability to counter spells while being a creature.
Torpor Orb retains it's effect as well.
This allows for some extremely cost-efficient plays, and means that your beaters tend to fulfill other roles before they start swinging, allowing you to get maximum use for your mana.
Regarding his +1: Darksteel Citadel has a CMC of 0, like all other lands, and is tutorable with this ability.
Tez's ultimate will rarely see use, but can close out long grindfests if need be. It is by far the weakest part of his kit.
Artifacts-
Darksteel Citadel- The prime target for every artifact animator ever, a 5/5 indestructible creature swinging on T3-4 is nothing to sneer at.
Tidehollow Sculler- Hand disruption is not insignificant, and if this bad boy sticks around, he is more than likely to be Tezzerated. I've beaten quite a few people to death with these guys.
Arcbound Ravager- Has the capacity to become a cheap beater, and is an important sac outlet for Ensnaring Bridge.
Ensnaring Bridge- It isn't useful against every deck out there, but is easily sideboarded out. This is an excellent wall to hide behind while you craft the tempo of the game to run in your favor. It is easily sacked, as there are 6 sac outlets in this deck.
Batterskull- The mainstay of every control deck ever.
[[engineered explosives[]- Great against tokens, and it's nice to have removal that also serves as Tezz material in a pinch. I have thrown it out for 0 several times just to Tezz it.
Thopter Foundry- Sac outlets 5-6 for Ensnaring Bridge. Also creates flying tokens and gains life, which is pretty neat.
Removal/Permission-
Zealous Persecution: Kills tokens, and is great against Delver.
Mana Leak: Permission is very powerful in this kind of deck. Killing your opponent's T2-3, or countering a Path aimed at your Tezzerated Darksteel Citadel can pull you very far ahead.
Spell Snare: Extremely efficient, it's great in this meta.
Path to Exile: There are very few 1 drop removal spells that can target any creature, and this is one of them. The exile can be very relevant, but it's main purpose in this deck is to kill Siege Rhino, which Abrupt Decay cannot touch. :c
Maelstrom Pulse: Kills things. All the things. Every type of thing. One of the major weaknesses of Esper is that it doesn't really have any efficient artifact/enchantment destruction. That makes this extremely useful as a 1 of.
Thoughtseize: Seriously, it's thoughtseize. Losing 2 life is more than worth potentially picking apart your opponent's plans on T1. There's nothing like dunking your opponent's Birthing Pod on T1. This, plus Tidehollow Sculler can make short work of combo based decks.
THIS PART IS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE!
Thoughts?
This is a very early iteration of this idea, and I would appreciate any comments peeps could give.
