So, I helped my wife build a Dimir Mill deck so that she could get into the new Gatecrash stuff. Consequently, that Dimir deck has become my bane.
We played some casual group Magic the other night (Archenemy and Two-Headed) with some friends, and she thrashed me thoroughly when I played this deck. Here is a general play-by-play of what happened in one of the games.
-
I got off to a great start. I drew three land and some fast-playing cards right off the bat. I had Memnite, Etherium Sculptor, Semblance Anvil, and Mirrorworks. By the third turn, I was able to get the Semblance Anvil out and all was gonna be gravy. I was feeling bad for my wife by turn three, because it was one of the first times that she really got to use her new deck, and she was getting mana-screwed.
-
Another player destroyed my Semblance Anvil. Boo. So I played Master Transmuter, which was destroyed almost immediately. Apparently, I was a target that night. :( However, all was not lost yet. I was getting great mana and my cards were playing right...until my wife got a huge break. She started getting mana, by turn six she dropped Mind Grind on the group, paying 3 for X. I burned about 10 cards right away. What was worse was that the cards I lost were all very crucial...so very, very crucial. On the following turns, she busted out a Nightveil Specter and Consuming Aberration.

Essentially, she was able to mill about 40 cards off of my library. The stars were aligned in her favor; it seemed that every time she milled my deck, I lost a ton of artifacts. Whenever my draw phase came up, I drew a land. Before my demise, I had 10 Islands in play along with an Ornithopter, a Memnite, an Etherium Sculptor, and a Palladium Myr. I spent four straight turns twiddling my thumbs because I kept drawing freaking islands. It wasn't long after that. sigh
So, usually this deck plays fast and can do some great damage. However, against a mill deck, I was completely hamstringed. So, I'm spitballing the idea of utilizing Reminisce in order to have a chance at getting cards back into my library from my graveyard. I will keep you posted. :)
