This Boros deck is my attempt to break the barriers of the current meta game decks of standard at the moment. Remember to +1 the deck if you like it! The biggest foes to face right now are:
Mono-Black Devotion
U/W and Esper control
G/R and Jund Monsters
G/B Rock and Graveplay
Mono-Blue Devotion
Weenie and RDW
My goal with this deck is to have a clear path to victory that is hard to interact with and consistent against each of the archetypes listed above. That being said we need to address the strengths and weaknesses of each play style.
To be able to consistently be able to win against different decks, your own has to have a lot of options when it comes to what your sideboard can do for you. The way the deck is configured at the moment, the strategy is that of a midrange deck. I play strong creatures at each spot on the mana curve, and curve out with the big Stormbreath Dragon while also having removal in the form of
Chained to the Rocks
, Banishing Light, and Mizzium Mortars to take care of the pro-white creatures in standard (Blood Baron of Vizkopa, and Stormbreath Dragon). This is a good initial strategy against aggro decks like weenies and MUD as well as the midrange and monsters strategies (we beat monsters because our creatures are better than theirs at every mana slot)
The most valuable part of this deck and one of the most breakthrough features is its adaptability. We need to be able to beat decks that develop and survive our initial attacks - and that's where the sideboard completely changes the deck. Into burn. We can change our strategy from creatures to burn in an instant after side boarding and you catch your opponent by surprise. Burn downright beats a lot of archetypes and being able to make this switch is essential. The reason that the deck isn't just the classic "Boros Burn" is the fact that my deck is strictly better. It has more answers to each archetype as well as beating burn face-to-face (hard for them to deal with Brimaz, King of Oreskos and Stormbreath Dragon, and
Boros Reckoner
).
Let's go over each card I've chosen for this deck:
Chained to the Rocks
- Cheap and effective removal.
Precinct Captain - Great body with first strike that generates tokens as provides nice devotion for Iroas later. The first strike trades with most other creatures at 2 mana
Imposing Sovereign
- This creature is vastly under rated. It does so well against any creature or aggro strategy that it can almost set you a turn ahead on creature damage.
Boros Charm - Incredible card. All of its abilities are used to great effect. It counters Supreme Verdict as well as Anger of the Gods and other burn spells. I often use it as a damage spell as well to get through the last points of damage.
Mizzium Mortars - This card is mainly here to get rid of the threats like Courser of Kruphix, Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Stormbreath Dragon, and Blood Baron of Vizkopa.
Boros Reckoner
- This card is just insane. It trades well with everything. It's always a threat unless you're playing against direct removal (looking at you, mono black)
Brimaz, King of Oreskos - Like the Reckoner, he is just extremely strong for his mana cost. The tokens he generates get super aggravating along with those from Precinct Captain.
Banishing Light - This is an amazing card. It deals with so many threats and keeps tempo quite well.
Warleader's Helix
- This is just value. Being able to swing life totals by 8 points for 4 mana is value.
Spark Trooper
- This is also value. More value, but way easier to stop. Worth the gamble, though. This card is nutz.
Iroas, God of Victory
- This card has everything we want. 7 power, makes our creatures harder to block, and the tokens we've generated won't die when chump blocked!!!
Stormbreath Dragon - In my opinion, this is the best creature in standard right now. It's protection from white, which is much of the formats removal (banishing light, detention sphere, oppressive rays etc). The fact that it's a flyer with haste isn't something to scoff at. Especially if it's swinging in with
Iroas, God of Victory
. The monstrous ability is huge as well but the game is usually over before that happens.
Iroas, God of Victory and Brimaz, King of Oreskos - These two synergize very well because the tokens Kitteh King makes upon attacking benefit by having to be blocked by at least two creatures and by not taking damage.
Iroas, God of Victory
and
Spark Trooper
- These two are great together because not only does it mean that your
Spark Trooper
is harder to block, it also means that enemy creatures with first strike are no longer a problem.
Imposing Sovereign
and
Spark Trooper
- This is more of a one-way street synergy. Having
Imposing Sovereign
out when they cast Polukranos, World Eater or
Kalonian Hydra
means that our
Spark Trooper
can get in for our full 12 point life-swing.
Boros Reckoner
and Magma Jet - This is good to kill things like
Nyx-Fleece Ram
that don't deal damage to
Boros Reckoner
, but have such a fat ass that he can't kill them.
