"Why'd it have to be snakes?"

In all seriousness though, I can't believe I didn't think of building around Hapatra sooner. I only even discovered she exists because of another card that I love to death, but haven't really been able to make super-viable until now: Mortarpod

The whole idea was to use tokens with deathtouch to ping opponents' creatures and keep their big stompies in check. But the problem with that, was that one of the only cards to PRODUCE tokens with deathtouch was Garruk Relentless  , which in itself required a lot of help from token multipliers like Doubling Season or Parallel Lives to make him worthwhile.

There was also Archetype of Finality, but her CMC was a little too high for my liking. In the end, I ended up settling with Bow of Nylea, attacking with my tokens, then sacrificing one with Mortarpod to take out one of the bigger threats on my opponents' field.

Still not very viable.

But now, with Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons, I can swarm and ping to my heart's content. I even threw in a Viridian Longbow and Thornbite Staff to have a little more fun with it.

The -1/-1 counter theme is also pretty fun to play with. Cards like Devoted Druid and Quillspike synergize with Hapatra extremely well, and there's tons of support for it out of Shadowmoor, where wither was first introduced.

Before anyone berates me for having nothing with infect in the decklist; that was a purposeful decision. It's far too easy to cheese an opponent with infect, and I think it takes a lot of fun out of what was meant to be a more casual format.

Some key combos for the deck are as follows:

Devoted Druid + Quillspike

Devoted Druid + Mikaeus, the Unhallowed

Nath of the Gilt-Leaf + Sadistic Hypnotist

Blowfly Infestation + Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons

Blowfly Infestation + Nest of Scarabs

Blowfly Infestation + Flourishing Defenses

Cryptolith Rite + Throne of the God-Pharaoh

Cryptolith Rite + Harvest Season
