Jund’em! This deck just feels so Jund to me and I love it. Just lots of quality value and resiliency. Here’s a breakdown of how it plays:

The Dire Dragon:

Obviously, much of this deck is centered around it’s leader, Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire . The deck is 100% permanents to guarantee I get something back on each activation. This might sacrifice a little overall power but I wanted to make the ability a centerpoint of the deck so it’s a trade-off I am willing to make. I built the deck around three major focuses that all tie back to Vaevictis’ ability. These are a lands-matter package, a top-deck matters package, and a multiple combats package.

Lands Matter

This package is both about value and, in the end, about game-winning power. The value of Oracle of Mul Daya , Courser of Kruphix , Crucible of Worlds , Lord Windgrace , and The Gitrog Monster is well documented. Here, Turntimber Sower , Nesting Dragon , and Zendikar's Roil all help give us fodder for Vaevictis’ ability. World Shaper and The Mending of Dominaria are able to bring back large quantities of lands. Lastly, Command Beacon , along with ways to replay it, let us avoid commander tax. The game-winners are the extremely powerful, Omnath, Locus of Rage and Titania, Protector of Argoth spiral out of control and Ob Nixilis, the Fallen can drain someone out quicker than they might expect.

Top-Deck Matters

The second package is smaller but can be extremely powerful. Setting up the top of our deck to make the best use of Vaevictis’ ability to cheat large spells into play is perhaps the quickest way to win a game. Oracle of Mul Daya and Courser of Kruphix let us get extra lands off of the top of our deck and let us see what is there, to know if we need to shuffle with a fetchland or some other effect. The second group of cards set up the top via scary-like abilities. Sensei's Divining Top is perhaps the most powerful, consistently digging three deep. Viscera Seer and Catacomb Sifter let us scry away lackluster cards by cashing in creatures. Doom Whisperer let’s us do a similar feat by simply paying a paltry 2 life. Lastly, we can simply put what we want on the top. Did your best creature die? Mortuary Mire will get it back for you! Need a specific card? Liliana Vess will fetch it out of the deck for you to cheat into play.

Multiple Attacks

One of the best ways to abuse Vaevictis is to simply attack with him more than once each turn! Hellkite Charger and Aggravated Assault can give us extra combats! If we want to chain these, Savage Ventmaw is here to help! Ventmaw goes infinite with Aggravated Assault and provides a huge discount on the hellkite’s ability. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds can also give us many attacks with Vaevictis and Aggravated Assault. As an added bonus for these attack steps, how would you like to trigger Ilharg, the Raze-Boar or Etali, Primal Storm multiple times per turn? Thought so.

Obviously, there are many other cards that help the deck run as well. Protean Hulk (for pure value), Razaketh, the Foulblooded , and Sidisi, Undead Vizier will always find you what you need. Bloodghast is always great value for any deck looking to sacrifice its own stuff. Anger and other haste-granting cards are extremely important to get Vaevictis swinging as soon as possible. Finally, Archetype of Endurance helps protect our important pieces while opening up others’ to Vaevictis.

Let me know what you think! Still a pretty early version of the deck but I am really enjoying the overall way it plays so far. Thanks!
