What's better than having multiple bombs hit field, netting an incredible amount of cards, and clearing the field simultaneously? Practically Nothing.
Introducing the Great Bomb Patrol! Coined based off of the key components of this deck:The Great AuroraBriarbridge PatrolGaea's Revenge
You'll be netting extra cards early game, ramping more mana than your opponent can imagine, and as early as turn 5 Tutoring for a bomb, or flat out casting Gaea's Revenge and swinging for a whopping 8!
It's a really, really fun deck to play. Holding a decent pace against most aggro (Looking at you, G/W Token), and generally holds its ground and board against control, there's always a bomb to detonate!
The Synergy!
This deck features some incredible synergies that are, surprisingly, quite easy to pull off!
Dropping Bombs (Not Casting)Briarbridge Patrol + Tamiyo's Journal
You could tap Tamiyo's to tutor and search for a bomb (assuming you have 3 clues from Erdwal Illuminator and Weirding Wood or Tireless Tracker with land drops) then lay Briarbridge Patrol, and on your end stop drop that bomb without paying its cost.
Note, that depending on your matchup there are alternative bombs you can place in here and ramp towards or combo out. They're left in sideboard due to my personal style of preference, but will work no matter the bomb(s) you ramp towards.
- Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger
- Void Winnower
- Breaker of Armies
Briar bridge doesn't need to be on the field while sacrificing the clues in order to drop a bomb, it simply checks the turn to see if you had sacrificed 3 clues.
Outlive the Opponent
Graf Mole
This card has a massive ass to block with, and assures your get as much use of the clues as possible!
Having Graf Mole
+
Tamiyo's Journal
on the field means you tutor for a card, net 9 life, and get ahead. How about searching for that second Graf Mole and dropping him for double the fun?
Massive Mana Ramp
In the worst of cases, or best, where you either can't or don't want to combo out your bombs: Ramp!
The key components for mana ramping are quite simple, and can be used with synergy amongst themselves, and other functions of the deck.
- Deathcap Cultivator
- Weirding Wood
- Hedron Archive
- Mage-Ring Network
We've got a mana dork (Deathcap Cultivator), land enchantments netting mana and clues (Weirding Wood), artifacts for 2 colourless (Hedron Archive), and a Storage Land for massive ramping (Mage-Ring Network)
Each of these can feed into casting your bombs, ramping into The Great Aurora, popping clues, and more!
Playing The Deck!
There are so many ways to play this deck effectively, which means it's always a blast and surprisingly consistent, when you begin to tutor and find the pieces you need!
In my 3 weeks playing this deck (so far) I've found my ideal play to be a slow but steady build, not rushing into Gaea's Revenge or the great aurora unless I need too- However, it changes based on my match-up.
I'll give 2 examples, ramping into Gaea's Revenge
+
The Great Aurora
, and preparing to combo out with clues.
Ramping Into Bombs
- Land (Any), Go.
- Land (That can tap for green), Deathcap Cultivator, Go.
- Land, tap Deathcap Cultivator for green, lay Weirding Wood (on either a pain land, evolving wilds, or basic), tap the enchanted land for 2 green, lay another deathcap cultivator, Go.
- Land, tap out for Gaea's Revenge, swing 8!!
By turn 4 you have 8 mana available to do almost everything you want. In this case, you're ramping into Gaea's Revenge and swinging hard!
If you side in the other bombs, you can hit Breaker of Armies at this point or lay more mana sources to ramp into bigger baddies!
Netting Clues, and Holding your Ground
- Land (Any), Go.
- Land (Island, or any if you have a blue source), Erdwal Illuminator, Go.
- Land (Forest, or any if you have a green source), Weirding Wood (netting 2 clues), Go. (you could swing 1, but it's generally not worth it.)
- Land, Graf Mole, Ongoing Investigation, Swing 1 (flying), Go.
Over time you start trading in your clues to net life and cards, use Tamiyo's Journal to tutor and find your combo pieces or solution, and simply outlive, strike hard, and bomb away!
Final Words
This deck is really fun, and great to play with; It's consistent, highly flexible, and really capable of giving most decks a challenge.
However, It's still not complete!
If you have any suggestions on cards to slot in, approaches to take with the bombs, ramping, and so forth- Let me know!
I've worked over time on this, and only recently Slotted in Gaea's Revenge due to its Green-Only Vulnerability. Before that it was the Eldrazi Bombs.
