The Kill Machine

Commander / EDH* BRGW

I have over the years owned several different aristocrats decks that have gone from Meren of Clan Nel Toth to Athreos, God of Passage to Teysa Karlov to Ravos, Soultender and Reyhan, Last of the Abzan . All of these decks really embraced the whole "kill my stuff to get value" strategy that aristocrat decks aim to fulfill. However when I saw Korvold, Fae-Cursed King get spoiled awhile back It really made me think about how much I need a deck where I can play all of the amazing staples of the aristocrats theme. This deck aims to do that by combining the token production of Tana, the Bloodsower with the recursion powers of Ravos, Soultender. The primary play pattern of this deck is to get some creature token producer early in the game to have blockers against aggro decks and also threaten profitable attacks. Once a token producing effect is down then we really want an effect that allows us to sacrifice creatures and we want an effect that gives us some benefit for creatures dying like Korvold, Fae-Cursed King providing card draw and a big body or Pitiless Plunderer ramping you with treasure tokens allowing you to play more spells in the following turns or maybe even Zulaport Cutthroat allowing each creature you kill to slowly widen the life gap between you and your opponents.

As I mentioned vaguely above this deck is capable of working as an aggro deck if we get a good token producer effect early game and get something like Vault of the Archangel to make blocks by your opponents not profitable at all as you would gain life and kill the blocker. Both our commanders help support this subtheme too as Tana, the Bloodsower creates tokens on damage being dealt and Ravos, Soultender gives all of our creatures an anthem effect which can prove to be quite powerful with a lot of tokens. Another benefit of playing more aggresive is that boardwipes act like fuel boosts to this deck unlike other decks that play aggressive. If our board get destroyed we may not have any creatures left, but our opponents will not like the triggers that will happen when all the creatures die.

This deck wants to do a lot of recycling of different value pieces so it is important to have a lot of quality recursion pieces to ensure that our engine of death can persist.

Meren, Alesha, Sun Titan, Athreos and Colfenor are the primary recursion pieces that run this deck. Alesha is able to bring both commanders back from the graveyard with the attack trigger along with many other value pieces. Meren just goes really well once you have sacrificed about 6-8 tokens or other creatures as you can get nearly anything back once you have that many counters. Colfenor is a brand new card which I have not gotten the oppertunity to play test with, but when paired with Ravos (the anthem ability) you are able to have tokens bring back some key pieces. For example if I have Colfenor, Ravos, and divine visitation out any token I make can bring back anything with toughness 4 or less back to my hand to recast which is very nice! Sun Titan is an amazing recursion piece as well as it can get back more than just creatures. I have taken the card into account when making card choices for enchantments and artifacts. Lastly Athreos isn't always going to get your pieces back to your hand, but it can help get your opponents life totals down low. It also allows you to pull some real nice moves if you have an opponent at 3 or less life because they can't pay life that will kill them so you have a way to get it back every time.

Mike is a bit different. He can recur pieces one time if they are not a human, but usually it works to get an additional ETB or death trigger on something like Protean Hulk or Dockside Extortionist to get 2 times as much value. Liliana first has to flip to do any recursion, but the play pattern with her is to try and get the ult as soon as possible as that will cripple all of my opponents for the rest of the game. Most of the time she will be used to disrupt hands though.

As many players know card draw is an essential part of the game. This deck is capable generating massive amounts of card draw with ease. It is really impressive how much this deck can draw without having blue in the color identity. The card draw is all a result from killing my own creatures and having death triggers.

In this deck I specifically tried to avoid putting combos into the deck as I wanted to make a very synergistic deck. With that being said there are some infinite loops that can be performed because of how synergistic these cards are. Whenever I play this deck I tend to avoid winning with any of these combos as I personally find it to be a boring and lacking in replayability.
