Well then, been a while since I've updated this thing. Crazy month for me, and that's not even counting going to GP DFW! (spoiler: I did horribly)
It was some playtesting at said GP that led me to go more creature-heavy than originally planned with this deck. Myth Realized going on a rampage and frustrating the opponent's creature plans are still the name of the game here, but the deck is now quite a bit faster than a pure UW control build. It can even hold its own against mono-red goblins (was about to win in testing, but burn decks gonna burn) and that unholy abomination that is GB Elf Aggro, at least when the RNG gods give me adequate lands...
Seriously, what are the odds of getting land screwed in 3/6 games versus GB Elves (in the same FNM, no less)?!
Rant aside, I feel like the deck's in a good place with the renewed rise of aggro in the meta. Highlights/explanations:
That Topan Freeblade is amazing value in my opinion. Easily the star of the early game, especially when it gets renowned, which isn't too hard with all the control-y elements of the deck. Seriously, a 2/2 vigilance for 2 CMC and renown 1? Sorry about slowing down the early game for ya!
Celestial Flare, because while it may be a strictly worse Devouring Light, it's still another anti-creature instant. Can't have too many of those, can you?
No Treasure Cruise or Dig Through Time. Extra card draw is awesome, I get that. But it doesn't do me much good if the game's more or less done before it can come to bear. One the main question marks with the deck as it stands. They're good, that much is obvious. But are they too slow?
Narset Transcendent. Narset, oh Narset. Wouldn't be the first time a lass has confounded me so... I love this card, I really do, but she doesn't quite do the work she used to. Sometimes it feels like I'm the only one that plays a spell. Played perfectly on curve, it could prevent that topdeck burn spell bullshit, but all that effort to block that? Looking for something to take her place. Would be Elspeth, Sun's Champion if she weren't about to rotate. Maybe Kytheon, Hero of Akros
Flip?
Calculated Dismissal in the sideboard only until I can get more than a pair of them. Yummy, yummy counterspells...
Swiftwater Cliffs?! Fuck it, why not? Blue source + lifegain, and if it's in my opening hand I can faint UR Thopters, perhaps?
Deck Questions:
-
Card draw: Feels a little light on that without treasure cruise and dig through time, but even with dredge I wonder if they're not fast enough.
-
Planeswalker: As above. I love Narset, but would Elspeth or Gideon be better in her place?
-
Land balance: I get bad luck with the draw, but seriously. The fact that it could happen concerns me. Already running 24 though...
