The Legend Never Dies

Commander / EDH BRG (Jund)

"Karplusan legends tell of an orc so cruel that he burned his own followers in rage - yet so revered that they rose from their pyres to serve him." In simpler terms you might understand, sacrifice your creatures for the glory of Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper , and then bring them back with a massive Living Death to blast your opponents to pieces in one fell swoop.

Why play Sek'Kuar over other Jund commanders? Really, he is a less-imposing Shattergang Brothers or Prossh, Skyraider of Kher. There are a few cards that go great with him though - red and black 3/1s go great with Garruk's Packleader, Greater Good, and Lyzolda, the Blood Witch to draw a ton of cards.

Themes and synergies:

Power matters - Reiterating the previous topic Greater Good lets me draw lots of cards off big guys. Ogre Battledriver helps make all these cards better.

Living Death - the real victory condition of the deck. Most games I try to play to set this up with Flayer of the Hatebound and and as many creatures as I can into the graveyard. Then a big Living Death or Twilight's Call returns 50+ power (see why power matters?) dealing 50+ damage to my opponents. An example weird play I often make to make that turn better - I always let Sek'Kuar go to my graveyard. He's more valuable to me there as an eventual 4 damage and a body than a general I might not cast.

How do cards get into the graveyard? There are a lot of tutors for specifically that - Buried Alive, Jarad's Order, Entomb.. but another good way is just to draw a lot of cards and discard them. Grim Haruspex, Skullclamp, Fauna Shaman, or Birthing Pod can turn a Bloodghast or Squee, Goblin Nabob into an engine. I don't play Reliquary Tower in this deck for a reason though - I'd rather fill my yard than keep things bottled up!

Again, I usually don't have a big hand; however, the people I'm playing with generally don't either. I run a lot of mutual discard like Liliana of the Veil, and Stronghold Rats help keep opponents hands low while you discard Reassembling Skeletons, Anger, and Reanimate targets. Mindslicer/Sire Of Insanity and Sadistic Hypnotist are the ones that truly shred opponents' hopes and dreams though.

Other disruption is light, but effective. Reckless Spite is an overlooked EDH card, and Blasphemous Act is the true board wipe.

Aside from putting lots of cards in the graveyard and hitting the Living Death I win button, the deck has a lot of solid back up plans that come from playing some of the best Jund cards. Reanimator + Ramp can land an Inferno Titan or Kaervek the Merciless early. Priest of Titania usually makes 2+ mana, the always good Sakura-Tribe Elder does a lot of work in this deck. Bearer of the Heavens + Life from the Loam and a couple lands or a Reanimate in hand is a very grindy, but effective way to win as well.

Many effects in the decks are creatures rather than spells, since those lead to better Living Death s and more triggers for Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper . Suggestions are welcome (and money isn't too big of an issue), but please spend a little time justifying the choice. Cards in maybe I'm thinking about/looking for.

May the legend never die!

Updates Add

Got a number of cards in the mail - a few more are on their way still but I'm putting these in now:

Black Sun's Zenith -> Blasphemous Act Per metalevolence's suggestion, swapping these out. Been looking forward to getting Blaspehmous Act - this is probably the best swap in all of these cards and should help me out a lot. Being able to search up and cast a board wipe in the same turn is a big deal. It might be worth playing both, but for now in goes Blasphemous Act!

Rhuric Thar, the Unbowed -> Kaervak the Merciless Have enough 6 drops, this 7 drop seems very good.

Reckless Spite -> Ashes to Ashes Exile! Nonartifact is also easier than nonblack.

Indrik Stomphowler -> Acidic Slime I like the Stomphowler's body a little better (though deathtouch is obviously great), but mainly I am now needing the "destroy target land" option for Cabal Coffers and other power lands that are cropping up.

Sire Of Insanity -> Doomed Necromancer I've been meaning to try out the Necromancer for a while, and Sire Of Insanity has not been very good for me. 6 mana was too much for his effect when I have four mutual discard effects anyway (Lilianna of the Veil, Rotting Rats, Stronghold Rats, and Mindslicer).

Necrataal -> Skinrender Metagame, Skinrender is better against Chainer, Dementia Master. Don't want too many non-black things with the next one...

Sudden Shock -> Shriekmaw Glad to grab one of these! He puts himself into the graveyard and can be cast at 5 for value. Seems cool. Suddden Shock is still great, but I do like creatures.

Avatar of Woe -> Lyzolda, the Blood Witch May not be the best idea to cut a big fatty, but Lyzolda seems fun. Shake things up! Oh and uh...

Diligent Farmhand -> Hermit Druid Yeah, this card is crazy. I don't have a lot of tutors and I am playing ~15 basic lands so I don't just win off it, but it's definitely good.
