The Sleepy Hamlet Massacre V: The Deathening

Pauper EDH Mono-Black

Jerenstein-Bear

It's grumpy ol' Uncle Istvan, back from being killed once again in The Sleepy Hamlet Massacre IV, and he's GRUMPIER THAN EVER!

Uncle Istvan is kind of a quirky card, the kind of card that just drips with charm and begs to be shared. Unfortunately it's not really a GREAT card, but this list focuses more heavily on the "theme" of the deck than it does its "mechanical effectiveness", so that's less of an issue than it would be when building competitively. A few things of note:

  • Uncle Istvan is the star of the show. Everyone loves a good slasher, so we're voltroning our boy with all kinds of equipment to make use of the fact that we can usually swing into combat pretty indiscriminately. EX: Ceremonial Knife, Explorer's Scope, Giant's Skewer
  • You can't kill Uncle Istvan. Even if you see the body, grumpy ol' uncle istvan is GONNA come back because the studio demands a sequel. He's already pretty safe from creature damage for obvious reasons, but -1/-1 instances, kill spells, and pretty much everything else is still gonna do him dirty so we've got plenty of ways to keep our favorite slasher on the board, and ways to get him back if those meddling kids get creative. EX: Supernatural Stamina, Abnormal Endurance, Disturbed Burial, Grim Harvest
  • Uncle Istvan does bad things. As homicidal maniacs are want to do, Uncle Istvan will brutally Murder anyone unfortunate enough to cross paths with him. There are plenty of ways to fill graveyards in this deck which can help clear out some of the more troublesome counters opponents may drop. EX. Blood Curdle, Hideous End, Terror
  • Other threats. Uncle Istvan is a terror, but he's not the only dangerous thing in this swamp. If Gray Merchant of Asphodel drops alongside istvan your drain/gain'ing 5 even without any other devotion. Istvan is immune to Crypt Rats damage so you can wipe boards and keep your own largely intact. Soldevi Adnate is niche tech but can be used to turn gary or istvan into big damage with something like Soul Burn or Drain Life, as well as putting gary into the graveyard to be recycled back onto the field.

Overall it's obviously not gonna be super competitive, but it's still interesting and flavorful which is a win all its own.
