Ever since I discovered Eventide, I have been obsessed. Obsessed with the tribal cards within that set. Honestly why have we not revisited Eventide? Get on it Wizards!
Regardless, the liege cards within this set have always brought me so much joy. Lords for the many dual tribes of magic. Powerful boosts with amazing innate effects. In my opinion, the most powerful of the liege cards is Creakwood Liege. Golgari has never been the most stompy archetype, favoring graveyard based strategies/shenanigans. However, I was inspired to try. With our goodest boi Creakwood Liege at the center of this deck, I present a Golgari devotion deck that cares less about what's going on our grave, and more so about smashing our enemies faces.
Let's get into the deck tech!!!!!
Creatures
Woodlurker Mimic: Another menace of a card gifted to us by Eventide. A crucial part of our deck and a win condition in and of itself. Woodlurker Mimic is essentially prowess on steroids. Our shell keeps it as a 4/5 consistently throughout the game. Opponents don't want to block her due to wither, but would also rather not take 4 damage to the face (or more) on turn 3. She's absolutely disgusting when paired with other creatures and combat tricks within the deck, and definitely one of my favorite cards within this shell.
Putrid Leech: My oh my, what a throwback. This little beauty used to be a crucial piece of the Jund archetype back in the day. She isn't played as much nowadays, but one mans trash is another mans treasure, amirite?. She fits perfectly in the game plan of our deck. She is powerful and efficient. Sure, we sacrifice some life, but I guarantee you we end up dealing much more damage to our opponents than we do to ourselves.
Glissa Sunslayer: We tech her for the utility she provides. At worst, she's a first strike deathtoucher that walls off our opponents threats. At best, she gives card draw or a naturalize effect. She's also able to remove counters from planeswalkers and artifacts which is unique and helpful in the current metagame.
Sarulf, Realm Eater: Such an underrated card from Kaldheim. He pairs extremely well with our removal package and grows enormous very quickly. He is also a late game board wipe in tough situations.
Sarulf, Realm Eater: My god the addition of this beauty was long overdue. We feed him via our removal package. He wipes boards we cannot deal with and snowballs on his own as a massive threat. One of the biggest MVP's in the current shell.
Creakwood Liege: You knew he was coming. The main inspiration behind this deck. He is a threat that needs to be answered immediately. If left out too long, he wins us the game. Opponents will be quick to remove this, but we honestly don't care. We have enough sizeable threats within the deck, that Creakwood is just a bonus win condition.
Instants
Fatal Push: Self Explanatory. Best removal spell in the modern format.
Assassins Trophy: One of the best Golgari removal spells. Hits non-creature permanents, which can be clutch in a multititude match ups.
Abrupt Decay: Un-counterable removal is always nice. Cannot beat it against counter heavy decks.
Force of Despair: Ohmylord this card wins us games on its own; especially against creature based decks. We often tap out on our turns to get threats out, so having surprise mass removal catches our opponents off guard and helps with tempo. Very helpful in my creature heavy local meta. Can also feed Sarulf in a pinch.
Sorceries
Pillage the Bog: Value value value. Helps us find anything we need. Can dig as deep as 4 cards on turn two. Definitely a worthy addition.
Planeswalkers
Grist, the Hunger Tide: She is an absolute menace in this shell. Provides solid utility and pairs perfectly with Creakwood Liege. Definitely pulls her weight and can win us games by herself.
Lands
Self explanatory. Fetches for speed and efficiency. We have to be as fast as possible, and our fetches are very much needed for this. Some special one of lands for versatility (Shizo and Restless Cottage).
That finishes up the deck tech. I hope you enjoy my fifth modern deck. Please upvote and comment. I am more than open to critiques and recommendations. As always, thanks for stopping by!
