Scion of the Ur-Dragon "TRANSFORMER" COMMANDER DECK.
The original 5-color Legendary Dragon that started it all is back in my yard!
Dragons are among my favorite creature types in MTG and I have always wanted to build decks around them even before commander was created. The only literal big problem was their high mana costs, making them not good for a 60-card deck (mostly). When commander comes around, I still find it challenging due to budget concerns, until I managed to make a casual The Ur-Dragon deck with lots of big beefy dragons.
However, I find Scion of the Ur-Dragon out of place in the deck, and after some thinking, planning and testing, I have renewed my interest in putting this transforming lizard in the helm of the deck. As the deck's commander, it literally makes ALL your dragons readily available in the Command Zone at any time on any given scenario.
DECK THEME AND PLAYSTYLE
This is basically a combo deck that utilizes Scion's "transformation" ability to surprise opponents. Although it may be predictable at times, it is still most of the time a guessing game on what Scion transforms into. Since the deck dumps dragons in the graveyard, a reanimation subtheme is also part of the deck's strategy. Hand and Graveyard shuffling back to the library is also present if you want to repeat certain combos. The goal is to win by utilizing Scion's transformation ability in any given scenario. Do note that Scion loses his transformation ability temporarily whenever he turns into another dragon, so use it with caution.
COMBOS AND WIN CONDITIONS
-
Moltensteel Dragon + Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon = classic Scion wincon. Basically, you activate Scion's ability twice while holding priority and then search for Moltensteel Dragon, pump it to 10 power, resolve and with the second ability transforms Scion into Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon. The additional power doesn't go away with the new transformation, which means it is a 10/4 Flying that will one-shot that most dangerous player in the table with infect damage. However, if Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar is out, this will kill all your opponents.
-
Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon + 9 other Dragons + Dragon Tempest = here is one combo that mostly overlooked when it comes to Dragon Tempest's triggered ability. Do note that the dragon entering the battlefield is the one dealing damage, and not the enchantment itself. So if by chance you have a boatload of 9 or more dragons in play (made easy via Ancient Gold Dragon's ability), cast Skithiryx and it will one-shot kill an opponent of your choice, since it will be dealing infect damage.
-
Animate Dead + Worldgorger Dragon + any damage source = another classic combo. With Animate Dead on hand, and a damage source available on board (e.g. Terror of the Peaks, Scourge of Valkas, or Dragon Tempest), transform Scion into Worldgorger Dragon. With it on the graveyard, cast and target Animate Dead with it, creating an infinite loop of ETB triggers that may kill all opponents.
-
Ancient Gold Dragon + Dragon Tempest or Scourge of Valkas = although not guaranteed to win on the spot, you have a 75% chance of taking out at least 1 player, a 65% chance of taking out 2 players, and a 50% chance of taking out all 3 players based on a die roll of d20.
-
Ancient Copper Dragon or Old Gnawbone + Hellkite Tyrant = unlike some of the other combos, this require setup that may span 2 to 3 turns, depending on the board state or die roll. Transform Scion into Ancient Copper Dragon and if you are lucky to get 20 treasures, on your next upkeep before your draw, transform Scion into Hellkite Tyrant, and you will win on the spot. Using Old Gnawbone might take longer to pull this off though.
-
Nicol Bolas + Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar = with Kediss in play, transform Scion into Nicol Bolas and rip off all your opponents' hands.
-
Multiple Dragons in the Graveyard + Patriarch's Bidding or Living Death = at the end of an opponent's turn before yours, activate Scion's ability multiple times, and with enough mana while holding priority, dump the graveyard with any combination of dragons such as Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm, Scourge of Valkas, Terror of the Peaks, Lathliss, Dragon Queen, or even Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon. During your upkeep, you can transform Scion into Dragonlord Dromoka, and on your main phase, cast either Patriarch's Bidding or Living Death, with the later being better because it functions also as a boardwipe. Then, return first Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm, followed by Scourge of Valkas, copies will start landing on the field with exponential damage triggers, amplified further if Dragon Tempest is in play.
One major issue the deck has is that other players may find it boring to have a tutor on your command zone where games lead to repetitive play patterns, which may result in "unfun" scenarios whenever you combo off for the win. Once the deck's play pattern is memorized, opponents may no longer be caught off guard, and can easily prepare to answer threats. Since the deck relies searching the library most of the time, be wary of cards such as Opposition Agent, Aven Mindcensor or even Stranglehold. Linvala, Keeper of Silence and/or Drana and Linvala is also a major issue that needs immediate answer.
Still, the deck can be a blast to play, most especially when you win out of nowhere.
