With the advent of modern, casual players such as myself find that their useable card pool has shrank significantly. For me, this meant that I lost almost all interest in MTG. I haven't played magic much for the last 3 or 4 months now, when before that it was a facet of my daily life. But that doesn't mean I've given up all hope. I've decided to try again, although I am very much discouraged by the price spikes in various older sets lifting a large quantity of cards forever beyond my financial grasp.
Over the summer, I spend a good week or so tuning a casual cleric tribal deck focusing on soul sisters. It turned out rather well. I was considering buying it, but when school started up again, I didn't have much time to think about magic. When I returned to consider purchasing it, I found that Proclamation of Rebirth, one of my favorite tricks in the deck, had soared to a lofty price of 10$ a piece. While I could have simply replaced it with another spell, that really killed the deck for me, it sucks all the fun out of deck building to have to cut based on price. It was manageable before modern, but now it's just getting ridiculous. It used to be that I could use virtually any card from Kamigawa up to standard, save a few extraordinarily powerful, extraordinarily expensive cards. Now, I find my card pool slashed by a good 25%, if not more.
But I digress. Since I'd still like to try out a soul sisters build, this time I've come up with a bit of a twist. I've decided to try to use my favorite DKA card as a centerpiece: Chalice of Death
. I happen to have a couple of Ethersworn Canonists that I picked up for their pre-modern price as well as a number of other powerful artifacts I'm not currently using. And wouldn't you know it, the canonists are clerics. That sealed it for me: artifact soul sisters.
