U/B Dragon Control (11th Place PPTQ)

Standard Competitive Control UB (Dimir)

Sideboard

This is based off of the deck that took second at Pro Tour Dragons of Tarkir.

PPTQ RESULTS:

Round one I played against Jeskai Tokens, and I made a few misplays, and ended up losing 2-0. Not a good start to the day.

Round two was against Esper Control (I don't think he was playing the full dragon package) and lost that 2-1. He boarded in Bloodsoaked Champion for the control mirror, and it did some work. Wasn't able to find enough removal spells for the flood of Bloodsoaked Champions in game three.

Round three pit me against Jund Midrange. I took game one fairly easily after finding my wincon and not letting him resolve anything. I took game two after he couldn't find green mana with a hand of green spells.

Round four found me playing against the Atarka Red Menace. I lost game one (to the surprise of nobody) but after boarding in 10 cards, I was able to take games two and three, after stabilizing at 1 in game three. VERY close games.

My round five opponent was playing a little lower to the ground version of Jeskai Aggro. After taking a lot of damage game one, I was able to stabilize and win. Icefall Regent was absolutely fantastic in this matchup, as he usually only had one threat at a time. I lost game two from mana screw, only having black mana. Game three was another very close one, with me stabilizing at 3. Silumgar, the Drifting Death and his hexproof ability saved me. He tried to target it with a Goblin Heelcutter and was then reminded that it had hexproof, and then conceded the game.

In round 6, the last round of the swiss, I was put up against Atarka Red. Again. I lost game one to a fast onslaught of creatures and tokens, to the surprise of nobody. After putting in the same 10 cards, I was able to win game two, off the back of Icefall Regent and I picked up game three as well. He had a Purphoros, God of the Forge in play, so anything but a land killed me, as I was at 1 life. Somehow he drew a land, and I won the match.

Overall, I went 4-2 at a 40 person event, getting 11th place. This was my first super competitive event, so I'm very pleased with how I did.

For those of you who want to know, here's my mono red gameplan:

IN: 1 Bile Blight, 3 Drown in Sorrow, 2 Duress, 2 Stratus Dancer, 1 Ultimate Price, and 1 Virulent Plague

OUT: 1 Ashiok, 1 Crux of Fate, 2 Dissolve, 1 Jace's Ingenuity, 2 Thoughtseize, 1 Ugin, 1 Perilous Vault, 1 Dragonlord Silumgar.
