The inspiration for this deck was Sage of Fables and Fathom Mage. When I looked at the good simic cards, I noticed a lot of them were also wizards: Prophet of Kruphix, Master Biomancer, Prime Speaker Zegana, and a few others that didn't make it into this deck. Throw in a Lorescale Coatl for a card-draw machine gun and the deck was looking pretty decent. Rancor would both buff the biomancer and allow a giant coatl or zegana to swing for the win.

While I had pretty amazing mid-range beatdown and card-draw engine going, it was all extremely vulnerable to removal and had no way of dealing with artifacts or enchantments. The rest of the deck is mostly built around filling in those missing pieces. Anything essential to the early/mid game, I tend to have a few of, while things that come in handy later I run one of and essentially "fetch" with zegana.
