Ulamog (Back with a vengance!)

Sideboard

I, like many, decided to build the Naya Marvel deck before Emrakul was banned. What a kick in the teeth that was. Anyway, I still have most of the cards and decided to switch up the play somewhat. Again, many people switched to Ulamog, I did too, but I also felt like getting delirium wasn't as important so I switched to a more aggro ramp style of Aetherworks Marvel deck.

How it works:

Pretty simple, you cast low cost creatures like Servant of the Conduit and Sylvan Advocate to get a defense up early game as well as gain some energy and mana ramp through conduit. I really like Sylvan Advocate here because if you get a Cryptolith Rite out you can potentially attack with advocate, then tap it for mana afterwards. You gain more energy and blockers/attackers when you cast cards like Aethertorch Renegade or Scrapper Champion. BTW Scrapper Champion is pure value and can be used as an energy sink if you can't find your marvel.

Flooding the board with creatures is a really good idea, and with Cryptolith Rite, you can ramp nicely into some of your higher cost creatures like Arborback Stomper which is just a good value card and Oblivion Sower which can potentially ramp you even more.

A few things can happen by turn 4. You can either cast Aetherworks Marvel and dig for an Ulamog or Decimator. Or you can hopefully cast one of your planeswalkers, either Nahiri, the Harbinger or Chandra, Torch of Defiance to start gaining some real control over the board. I added 1 copy of Nissa, Vital Force in place of a commencement of the festivities in the mainboard. I'll have to wait and see if this was a good decision or not.

One of the nice things about Cryptolith Rite is that it can set you up to potentially hard cast Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. This means that getting an Ulamog in hand is not necessarily a bad thing.

As far as side boarding goes you have a bunch of instant removal spells in Harnessed Lightning and Shock that can be good against aggro decks. Shock is important in that it can be used to disrupt the Sahili Rae/Felidar guardian combo. I'm not sure how prevalent this combo will be in my meta yet, but I would say that this deck definitely needs some more solutions for it. Suggestions welcome. You have some more options in the sideboard for creatures if your up against more controly decks. Still working on solutions for flyers, as this deck is currently lacking in defense against aerial assaults. Right now, it's just Sigarda, Heron's Grace and removal spells. commencement of the festivities is also in the sideboard as a sneaky card to have. iIt can potentially turn games, but it's very situational which is why I took it out of the mainboard. Suggestions are appreciated

Not sure yet about Paradox Engine. Threw it in the sideboard for kicks, but if you have a Cryptolith Rite and Paradox Engine and some creatures out, you should have no problem making a ton of plays.

Let me know what you think/if you have suggestions. Planning on trying it out at FNM tonight. I'll post an update with the results.

Hey guys! Well, the deck ended up taking 2nd place at my local FNM. I ended up going 3-0-1 so, as of now it's undefeated ;) I'll attempt to give a rundown of each match. Here we go:

Match 1: vs U/R Aetherworks Marvel 2-0

Game 1: My opponent ended up getting an Ulamog out with his Marvel and exiled my Marvel and a Sylvan advocate. I still had some creatures out on the board including an Aethertorch renegade, which I used my energy to hit him for 6 the next turn and then sacrificed to emerge my Decimator, pumping all my creatures and swinging in for lethal.

Game 2: Not much to say here. My opponent kept a bad hand with only 1 land and a couple of Marvels and ended up getting mana screwed. I was able to get my board going with little creatures including Sylvan Advocate and Champion Scrapper to deal sufficient damage for the win.

Match 2: vs U/B Artifacts 1-1-1

Game 1: Opponent got mana screwed and I got Ulamog out with the marvel taking out his lands, making it that much more difficult. This one I won.

Game 2: This game was a lot more grindy. It took me awhile to get going here, but with life gain from Woodweavers puzzleknots and Arborback Stomper I was able to stay quite competitive. Unfortunately, because he was playing blue, every time I marveled for a big baddy, it ended up being countered. My opponent played a Mechanized Production on a Tezzeret's Simulacrum and started pinging me each turn. He was able to kill me before the win condition with Mechanized Production went off.

Game 3: Because game 2 went on so long, we were on turns very quickly. Not sure who would have won. I had some things countered, but was setting up. Guess we'll never know.

Match 3: vs. U/G Energy 2-0

Game 1: This game was a lot of fun. I was able to play some low cost creatures and ramp with Cryptolith Rite early into 2 Arborback Stomper which was excellent since I had a Decimator of the Provinces in hand also. The winning play went, tapping Aethertorch Renegade and using 8 energy to deal 6 damage. Then I sacrificed the renegade and emerged the Decimator to swing in for the win. Very satisfying.

Game 2: This game went pretty routine. Using puzzleknot to gain energy/life. On turn 5, cast an Aetherworks Marvel and spinning the wheel to get an ulamog. Exiled some stuff and pretty much just swung in to destroy their deck. They didn't seem happy...but I was ;)

Match 4: vs. U/R Prowess/Thing 2-0 (not entirely sure what to call this deck. It had the blue gear hulk, thing in the ice, and a lot of burn.)

Game 1: They ended up getting me down to 2 life by pinging me, but I ended up ramping into ulamog with cryptolith rite for the win.

Game 2: This was a grindy one. Thought I was going to die because I kept missing on my Marvel and getting countered by my opponent. Woodweaver's Puzzleknot put in work though, keeping my life up and getting me energy. Again, this game ended with me using energy on Aethertorch Renegade for 6 damage and then emerging Decimator of the Provinces for the win.

Conclusion: The deck certainly had feet. My biggest problems were dealing with counter magic. I thought that I would have more trouble with flyers, but I really didn't see to many. I'm not entirely sure what needs to change, but maybe y'all could give me some suggestions.
