Based on some decks that have won Grand Prix tournaments.Use Aether Vial to bring out merfolk quickly, and each of them pump each other up (see Lord of Atlantis. Then Mutavault can transform into a creature with all creature types, including merfolk, and gain islandwalk from the ever plentiful Lord of Atlantis and Master of the Pearl Trident.

There are counterspells and card:Spell Skite to protect the merfolk, but really, with the speed in which you get your creatures out while screwing with the opponent's mana with Spreading Seas and making use of the islandwalk ability, losing a creature or two really isn't a concern.
