Sideboard

A variant on Pedro Carvhalo's UR Thermo-thing deck, modified to handle the rotation out of Magic Origins and a smaller budget. Like the original, Fevered Visions is the main engine of the deck, while Thermo-Alchemist and Thing in the Ice provide early defense, an alternate win condition, and an additional clock on the opponents. Big Jace, red burn, and blue counter/bounce spells also provide additional time for the clock to tick and backup burn.

Main Modifications

Main modifications from Carhallo's deck are:

  1. Replacing Jace, Vyrn's Prodigy with an additional Sanitarium and Jace, Unraveler of Secrets

  2. Reducing the number of Fiery Tempers and Incendiary Flow s on the main board to make room for 2 each of Nahiri's Wrath and Geistblast . This makes up for some of the discard lost from baby Jace, and gives a spell that can go either deep or wide on damage. In addition, Geistblast can to either double up wrath or protect another spell from being countered/quelled.

  3. Replace Fiery Impulse with Galvanic Bombardment for both budget and rotation reasons, and because I prefer it has a decent chance to scale up past what Fiery Impulse can do against midrange decks.

Sideboarding

  1. Dispel is the default to protect your spells against counters. It can be replaced to counter your opponent's big threats after sideboarding. Radiant Flames (or even better, Kozilek's Return if you have it) is good against token or wennie decks, Negate is good in the mirror, Dispel + Spell Shrivel against mid-range/combo decks, Compelling Deterrence against janky Demonic Pact decks if they're in your meta, and Summary Dismissal against ETB Eldrazi decks.

  2. Creatures should be added/subbed based on opponent decks, too. Against small creatures, Weaver of Lightning and Bedlam Reveler are useful to kill them, block them, and provide a way to win since the clock of Fevered Visions is not very strong.

  3. You can also customize the burn in sideboarding, either keeping the Galvanic Bombardment against fast/medium decks, or subbing them for the two slower burn spells and either more counterspells or Bedlam Revelers for more midgame and to combo with Nahiri's Wrath.
