Creature (4)

Instant (4)

U/W Approach was a fringe deck at the tail end of last Standard season and it gained a few interesting tools from Ixalan. It also lost some key early removal spells to rotation, but this is heavily offset by no longer having to deal with Gideon, Ally of Zendikar or Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger.

With a maindeck completely devoid of creatures, U/W Approach has an excellent Game 1 against most decks because of how many copies of Fatal Push, Harnessed Lightning, and other removal spells people have to play to deal with the multitude of amazing creatures currently available. This is a major advantage for a Week 1 deck, as one look at all the cards people are excited about shows nothing but creatures:Dinosaurs! Pirates! Vampires!

People want to play with the new exciting threats, and U/W Approach does a very good job of containing them with cards like Fumigate and Settle the Wreckage while also providing a win condition completely different from all of these perceived threats. This is usually a recipe for Week 1 success, so do not sleep on this deck.t also forces players to play around new, tricky cards like Settle the Wreckage, which is great for inducing mistakes. I can't tell you how many players walked blindly into my very obvious Archangel Avacyn blowouts Week 1 of Shadows over Innistrad Standard, and putting players into unfamiliar waters over and over again will usually yield positive results.

Tip: Be aware of Settle the Wreckage, but don't play around it just to play around it. Sometimes it is going to be correct to attack into it and make them spend their mana (so they can't do something like Glimmer of Genius). Never forget your goal is to "make the play that helps you win the game," not "be clever and play around Settle the Wreckage."

The weakness of U/W Approach lies in two Ixalan reprints and a current sideboard staple:U/W Approach is entirely dependent on resolving some very expensive, sorcery-speed threats, and a well-timed Duress, Spell Pierce, or Negate can completely unravel their plans. Having access to any of these three cards will wildly swing your matchup against the deck, which is something to keep in mind when building your deck and sideboard. Also be aware that the U/W Approach players are aware of this as well; be ready for them to bring in creatures like Regal Caracal and Torrential Gearhulk!

U/W Approach is probably going to be the most important deck at #SCGDFW, so whether you plan on playing it or playing against it, be ready.

MATCH 1 ( UB Merfolk) Won 2-0 - Round 1 1 land for 3 turns, with 2 cycles from Cast Out/Censor. Got the board wipes on turn 6. He got out 3 Jace Castaways and made 2 tokens of the card. He had no main counters. I got 2 approach turn 9/10 to win the game and he was to slow on dealing damage to win. - Round 2 Put in torriental Gearhulks and Regal Caracals. He had no counters for them from sideboard and brought in negates/spell pierces. I went face and won turn 8.

MATCH 2 (UB Pirates) Lost 0-2 This deck played like Ram Red but he had the counters in main to deal with my boardwipes, a 1 drop blue bat pirate that countered my direct target spells, and pirates that smashed my face. I feel like this is an upcoming deck that has yet to be discovered by the vast majority of the meta-scene.

MATCH 3 (UW Approach) Tie 1-1-1 - Round 1 I won by getting my approaches off turn 7/8 back to back without any answers from opponent. Most of game was drawing for Approach - Round 2 He brought in counter spells, I brought in Creatures. He had 4x Disallow and I was not playing them at the time. Disallows won him the game and I could feel my Supreme Wills wanting to be Disallows ever so badly. - Round 3 We went into time. I had 1 Torrential on the board as we crept into turn 0 and got him down to 5 health. Turn 4 he sniped the Torrential and again my Supreme wills wanted to be disallows. It went his Cast Out, into my negate, into his negate, into my negate, into his negate... with my supreme will being in hand and he had 3 mana open with 1 card in hand. Disallow would of won me that game. MATCH 4 (Sultai Energy) Tie 1-1-1 - Round 1 Lost due to Scarab God and not having counter up for it or settle the wreckages. He held back him creatures and swung in. I fumigated, 2 turns later he resetted the board. I fumigated again, but he came back and took his time chopping down my health. - Round 2 Had the answers, wreckages worked as I wanted them to, the torrentials saved the day, and back to back approaches won the game - Round 3 We went into time. I got 1 Approach off. Turn 5 I got down to it again with a supreme will in hand and went for the play, he negated and had 6+ mana open for my supreme, dug deeper and couldnt find an answer. Went in the books as a tie. MATCH 5 (Ram Red) Won 2-1 - Round 1 He got there but it took him 10 turns. I settled the board bringing out 5 lands. He had 2 Ram lands that Rammed my butthole the following turn, and I was at exactly 4 health. Settle actually lost me the game on this round. - Round 2 Took out the 3 Approaches and went for creature based answers with gates up. I had the answers, a couple Gates, 3 caracals, and multiple aether meltdowns to stall the board. Won by dealing damage with Kitty-Cats - Round 3 By turn 4 I had out 3 Authority of the Consul Gates up and facing his stunned face. Censors and Supremes held back the hasties. Following on t5/6 2 Caracals came back to back to bring me back from 6 health and slowly crept me back to 20 health while he fumbled with his lands and pondered the draw. Approaches came back into the main for this game and won me it on turn 16 for me.
