Card by Card Breakdown

Listed by CMC and Type.

1 CMC:

• Favored Hoplite: Heroic ability gives it +1/+1 counter, it's what we want.

• Hopeful Eidolon: Not as ideal as a first drop compared to the Hoplite, but I chose this over soldier of pantheon because it can be an enchantment later on. May swap over if it turns out I never get to pay its bestow cost.

• Aqueous Form: Trigger Heroic, unblockable, scries.

• Gods Willing: Trigger Heroic, spot removal denial.

• Triton Tactics: Trigger two heroics, combat trick, extra beef to survive from things like Polukranos monstrous ability.

• Swan Song: Counters anything we can't deal with, turning it to a manageable 2/2 bird. This can also be an extra removal denial.

2 CMC:

• Phalanx Leader: Excellent heroic ability, +1/+1 counters for all.

• Battlewise Hoplite: Scries and gain +1/+1.

• Ordeal of Thassa: Triggers heroic, can net us card draws before defenders are declared - very important.

3CMC:

• Fabled Hero: Double Strike, +1/+1 heroic... very nice.

Additional Notes

I'm counting on the U/W scry lands getting released in Born of the Gods. I'm expecting something that can sit more comfortably as the 1CMC creature in place of hopeful Eidolon too. Somehow I'm also thinking split mana cost spells are going to come out to enrich the devotion theme. We will see.
