Commander / EDH Artifact Budget Competitive Mono-White Voltron

Pygmyrhino990

Sideboard

A voltron commander deck, based around the new Balan, Wandering Knight who literally screams voltron at me. 2 MANA TO ATTACH EVERYTHING TO HIM. It does not get better than that. Not only does that nullify any weird equip costs such as "sacrifice an artifact" (Piston Sledge) but it also allows me to get around the highest mana equip costs such as Argentum Armor.

THIS DECK IS BUDGET DO NOT TELL ME TO ADD ANYTHING OVER $10

Chances are, if you recommend it, I've already seen it as an option and either it was too expensive or I decided it wouldn't synergise as well as I thought.

Most good commander decks have alternate commander options. These other commanders often synergise with the deck but differ in what they do to different types of decks.
  • Balan, Wandering Knight: With balan as the main commander it is pretty basic, I can play as much as I want and then win by commander damage. You would typically play him in decks with 'go tall' strategies with my multitude of cards to prevent blockers (Rogue's Passage). Also works against other voltron decks with go tall strats or against burn decks who don't play many creatures.

  • Sram, Senior Edificer: As a secondary commander, I can cast him cheap and then play all of my cheap equipments and hopefully draw into one of my voltron commanders and then swing for the win. He is more of a "worst case scenario" commander in this deck, as the aim is to utilize my other two cat-manders abilities to up my voltron game.

  • Kemba, Kha Regent: Just in case I come against a deck designed around going wide (as opposed to Balan who I use for go tall decks) I have Kemba. He is just amazing at synergizing voltron with go wide strategies especially with cards that reduce equip costs such as sigardia's aid, which is less needed with Balan.

So when making a voltron deck, we typically do not want things that grant shroud, as it stops us from equipping other equipment to the creature. HOWEVER, with Balan, Wandering Knight, I can avoid this completely with his ability. Thus, any equipment granting shroud is strictly sideboard in the event that we come against a deck that requires us to use either sram or kemba as our commander.

Otherwise the equipment we use should be strictly to provide our commander with power and toughness boosts, with a few exceptions such as ramp. We expect to come against decks such as eldrazi tron or burn decks that will focus on trying to destroy our voltron, thus ramp is important. For example, in the event that we come against an eldrazi titan, and it is apparent they will attack us next turn and annihilate our commander, we need to immediately attack with Sword of the Animist equipped to provide the necessary mana to replay our commander next turn. Thus we have Chariot of Victory and other haste granting equipment in the sideboard.

Any other equipment is strictly damage boosting, or defensive in its capabilities. The reason for the excessive amount of defensive cards is in the event we need to use Pariah's Shield, which in my local meta is important. Because I often come against decks with swarms, it becomes necessary. Otherwise we have a few board wipes to keep everything under control
