I'm sure everyone's made one of these, but I figured I'd try my hand. Some input would be great.
Shock is always good: nice 1-drop, general-purpose burn.
Magma Jet mainboarded over Skullcrack because despite the slightly lower damage, the Scry 2 and the ability to target creatures outweighs the situational potential of Skullcrack. Will board Skullcrack in against lifegain.
Lightning Strike is, naturally another workhorse burn spell.
Rakdos's Return because discard is really strong right now, and he combos well with the rest of the deck.
Molten Birth
is the cornerstone of this deck. I drop this while all my combo creatures ( Guttersnipe , Young Pyromancer and Purphoros, God of the Forge ) out and I'll get three weenies AND deal 8 damage. For 3, you can't beat that with a stick
For my last two mainboard slots I've gone through a LOT of options, but ultimately I settled on Strionic Resonator. When I've got one of these puppies out with my combo creatures I can make the absolute most of my mana and spells. It makes nearly everything else about the deck better.
On to the sideboard.
Already explained Skullcrack.
Mizzium Mortars, because I need SOMETHING that can kill Blood Baron of Vizkopa.
Ultimate Price
instead of
Dark Betrayal
. My reasoning here is pretty much that unlike DB which only helps me against black, UP helps me against any monocolored creature. Even something like Gruul Monsters, a two-color deck hates UP because most of its creatures like Polukranos, World Eater and Stormbreath Dragon are one or the other. I think that's a good trade-off for one additional colorless mana.
Dreadbore
now in the sideboard against decks that rely on Planeswalkers as well as those against which I need to bring much largers amount of spot removal to bear.
Swamp . Having basic land in one's sideboard might seem weird, but the way I see it, I'll need to make the mana balance somewhat blacker if I board in a bunch of mono-black spells like I might have to.
