Dark Depths is still on the modern banned list but why? With the current state of the metagame, Marit Lage doesn't seem out of pace or place so here is a thought experiment. Legacy Turbo Depths translated to modern with a sideboard geared toward the current meta where Dark Depths is also present. In the absolute best case, this deck can produce a turn 3 win with protection: Apostle's Blessing with Dark Depths+Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth+Vampire Hexmage or Dark Depths+Vesuva.

Answers present in modern to the combo include variance, Cleansing Wildfire, Path to Exile, Celestial Purge, Blood Moon, Vapor Snag, Containment Priest (I stand corrected and illiterate, Marit Lage cannot be contained!), Spreading Seas, and the classic Diabolic Edict.

Liberate Marit Lage!

Edit: I did think of the consequence of unbanning a broken land in a format warped by a broken lands deck. A first glimpse at the consequences can be found here: https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/uro-pile-with-depths/?cb=1605745872 . I just took a 5-0 league finish deck and swapped two fetches for the combo. Seems like something an Uro player would do. It is a little disturbing that Omnath is good enough for modern. What happened to us? Ultimately, I don't think unbanning Marit Lage would change anything at all. I'll look into a simic turbo depths build for modern soon to investigate that further.
