Where the Wild Things Are | Naya Combo

Standard* Aggro Combo RGW (Naya)

Sideboard

Anyone who follows the modern format at all knows of Patrick Dickmann and his innovative deck, Tarmo-Twin. Tarmo-Twin is a take on the classic combo deck, Splinter Twin. What makes Tarmo-Twin so good is the ability it has to attack from many angles. It can either play like a typical combo deck, and attack with infinite creatures, or follow an aggressive beat down path. This keeps opponents on their back foot and guessing, they now have to work on beating two strategies and not just one.

Sadly I am not Patrick Dickmann, and this is not modern, but we can sure do our best to make a Naya combo deck.

"But his is standard," You say "There are no combos in standard, especially not in Naya colors!"

Wrong!

With a little bit of inspiration from Patrick Dickmann, and Aaron Barich I have come up with this 75. In theory the deck follows an aggressive Naya strategy, that forces opponents on to the back foot to try and stay ahead of my creatures, that can also close games out of nowhere with our combo.

The Combo

  • Creature + Pump/Trample + Double Strike.

"What???" You might say, "I don't get it!" Let's look at an example:

Turn 3: I have a board of Experiment One and Fleecemane Lion. My opponent is at 18 life. I move to combat and attack. My Mono Black Opponent is forced to Hero's Downfall my lion as to not fall too far behind. They take 2 dropping to 16. There turn they cast Desecration Demon. EOT I flash in a Boon Satyr. Untap Draw, Bloodrush the Ghor-Clan Rampager onto the Satyr and Boros Charm the satyr and that's 16 damage, GG. This situation also works with Selesnya Charm and Ajani, Caller of the Pride.

Now you can hopefully see how the synergy between the aggro and the combo works. Your opponent is forced to deal with the pressure your applying, and while they are doing that you can just combo off and kill them.

Let's take a look at the main deck!

Creatures:

  • 4x Experiment One: Aggressive and resilient. This card is key for part one of our game plan.

  • 3x Fleecemane Lion: Aggressively costed. One of the key things about this guy is the ability to attack through Sylvan Caryatid. Great at early game pressure.

  • 4x Voice of Resurgence: He's kinda a good card. Makes all removal sorcery speed, and Devour Flesh is a big enemy of ours.

  • 1x Fiendslayer Paladin: Makes the Mono Black matchup much better. He also is great against aggressive red decks. When they're playing 2/1's and 2/2's a 2/2 with first strike is hard to beat.

  • 4x Witchstalker: Man do I love this guy. So underrated. Mono-Black has a very hard time beating him, and he's the perfect card to combo off with as I know he won't get blown up.

  • 3x Boon Satyr: Lets me combo off out of nowhere. EoT flash him in, untap draw your dead.

  • 4x Advent of the Wurm: See Boon Satyr

  • 4x Ghor-Clan Rampager: Key part of the deck. With out him the combo is much weaker. Don't forget you don't have to have tunnel vision on the bloodrush. A 4/4 for 4 isn't always the worst.

Other Combo Pieces:

  • 3x Ajani, Caller of the Pride: Double strike and evasion makes for a great combo piece. His +1 is never terrible and can help make sure that the next turn is lethal.

  • 4x Boros Charm: All three modes are relevant, Supreme Verdict protection, straight burn, and a key combo piece.

  • 4x Selesnya Charm: Makes a guy, pumps, and makes sure people don't have that silly idea that they should block. +2/2 is very critical as it is an extra 4 points of damage with double strike.

The sideboard

Wow, you take a look at and you think, what the hell is this guy thinking. This is a transformative sideboard. Naya Aggro game 1, then we go into a cocoon, and when we come out where a beautiful butterfly, I mean Naya Hexproof. This really helps shore up some of the worse matchups especially Mono Blue and other Aggro decks.

Thanks for checking out the deck. I really appreciate all feedback and comments.
